Louis Philippe chairs with armrests, set (3 pcs.) — walnut, France, circa 1835
This set of three walnut chairs with armrests (restoration armchairs) represents the subdued, flowing elegance of the Restoration and Louis Philippe period. Each chair is characterized by the large, freely curved volute armrest with a double spiral — a shape that gives this period its unmistakable, almost musical rhythm. The reclining top rail and the curved front legs continue this undulating line, while the rich yellow velvet upholstery with brass studs highlights the warm tone of the walnut.

Production period and art style
Restoration period / Louis Philippe period, circa 1830–1840, France. This is a transitional period from the strict symmetry of the Empire style to a lighter, more comfortable form — a period when masters gave up the opulence of bronze details in favor of clean wood lines and expressive, sculptural volute armrests.
A snapshot from the Restoration period (Louis Philippe): Alfred de Musset entered the quiet Parisian study and sat by the window, where carriages slowly passed on the boulevards on a June afternoon. In the dim light of the room, along the wall, several smoothly curved, spiral shapes gleamed in the faint light — slender wooden curves that wound inwards like rolled-up violin keys, ending in a firm, round knot. His fingers lightly embraced the cool, smooth wooden loop, following the rhythm all the way to the dark core. In this simple, yet flawlessly flowing line lay some of the longing of the romantic generation — the quiet, contemplative melancholy that the poet so often tried to capture in his verses.
Material and craftsmanship
The chairs are made of walnut wood with a warm reddish tone and natural patina. The main detail — the massive, handmade volute armrests — is an expressive piece of woodwork that demonstrates the mastery and sense of pure form of the period.
Use in interiors, design, and photography
Three harmonious chairs with armrests form a grateful set — either as seating around a table or by a fireplace, or as separate accent chairs in a study or by a desk. The yellow velvet upholstery makes them an effective object for photography and classic interior compositions.
Condition
All three chairs are in good, stable condition with fresh, rich yellow velvet upholstery and decorative brass studs. The wood surfaces retain a noble patina with some traces of age and use. The condition of the object is fully reflected in the photographs.
