Description

Antique wooden table with bronze — Historicism, France, late 19th century (6726)

This elegant antique wooden table with bronze (antique guéridon) is an exquisite masterpiece of Historicism period salon furniture. High, round tables of this type historically served as luxurious stands for decorative precious metal vases, sculptures, or salon lamps. The item’s structure is supported by three solid, bamboo-shaped bronze columns connecting the top surface to the lower shelf. The expressive base adds significant artistic value — the bronze frieze is adorned with detailed classical-style relief ornaments, while its three legs are shaped as entwined, massive lion or mythical creature masks (mascaron) with acanthus leaf motifs, transitioning into stylized paws. The two-tier wooden surfaces are made of high-quality, polished mahogany with a deep, warm tone and distinct wood grain, creating a perfect material contrast with the patinated bronze.

DIMENSIONS:

  • Height: 78 cm

  • Width (diameter): 42 cm

PERIOD OF MANUFACTURE, ARTISTIC STYLE, ERA Made approximately 1875–1890, in France. The item represents the late phase of Historicism (Napoleon III / Second Empire style) and the aesthetic of the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era), where the classical proportions of the Louis XVI style organically blend with the late 19th-century fascination with exotic and natural motifs (bamboo-shaped columns). It was a time when such furniture in the salons of the Parisian and other European metropolises’ haute bourgeoisie testified to the owner’s refined taste and high social status.

A Belle Époque snapshot: Guy de Maupassant slowly turned towards the window… from which a view of the sun-drenched Boulevard Montparnasse opened up. Through the thin silk curtains, a soft light entered the room, making the dark, polished wood in the corner of the room gleam with a deep, reddish hue. His fingers paused for a moment on the cold, embossed metal formation at the base of the table, tracing its strict, classical lines and the peculiar contours of the masks hidden in the semi-darkness. This small, yet majestic silhouette held within it an inscrutable secret of an aristocratic salon, creating an indescribable, uplifting, and simultaneously nostalgic atmosphere in the room.

MANUFACTURER AND MARK Although no direct maker’s signature has been preserved on the furniture, the quality of the bronze castings, the precise processing of details, and the fastening systems unequivocally point to the performance of top-tier Parisian furniture workshops specializing in the production of meubles de luxe (luxury furniture) following the best 18th-century traditions.

RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE Tables of this type from the late 19th century with a completely original, undamaged, and unaltered structure are a great rarity. Most often, the bronze decorative elements have been lost over time, or the wood finish has been damaged. This specimen has excellently preserved its original architectural integrity.

APPLICATION IN INTERIORS, DESIGN, AND PHOTOGRAPHY The table will serve as a stunning visual accent in classical, neoclassical, or eclectic interiors. Thanks to its compact size and height, it is ideally suited as a side table next to a luxurious sofa, a telephone stand in a salon, or as a pedestal for a striking interior object. Its dark wood and bronze sheen create a deep, photogenic contrast, making it an excellent element in the architectural compositions of a room.

CONDITION The item is in excellent antique condition. The wooden surfaces are firm, without cracks or serious damage, retaining a pleasant and natural sheen. The bronze elements are firmly fixed, with a beautiful, natural patina formed over time, which only enhances the furniture’s authenticity. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
