Louis XV Style Marquetry Side Table with Marble Top — Mid-20th Century
Rococo Era Snapshot, Madame de Pompadour (Madame de Pompadour):
The serene silence of a warm afternoon envelops the small garden pavilion, where sunbeams dance across the fringes of brocade curtains and light up the soft pastel cushions. Upon a delicately carved oval console table rest two small objects, their flawless, reddish-brown stone slab enclosed by a profiled metal belt that glints in the early cool light. Slender, aristocratic fingers lightly grasp the uniquely embossed wood framing, lifting the cup against the light like a fragile work of art from its satin-smooth base.
The air is thick with the sweet scent of amber and hot chocolate rising from the thin porcelain rims, creating an atmosphere of cozy tranquility. These diamond and leaf bands masterfully inlaid within the wood marquetry on both the drawer front and lower shelf embody the period’s love for natural simplicity and quiet grandeur. The sun slowly sets, leaving bright reflections of cast metal lines upon the smooth stone, which carries the lost majesty and unattainable elegance of the court.
This elegant oval marquetry side table was produced in France in the mid-20th century in the fine aesthetic of the Louis XV style. The piece stands as a high-quality reproduction that accurately reference the fluid, organic movements and romantic ornamental traditions of the 18th-century Rococo period.
The highlighting feature of this table is its distinctive double-tier design and its beautifully veined, multi-colored reddish-brown marble top, elegantly wrapped in a protective brass rim. The front of the single drawer and the lower oval shelf are heavily embellished with a detailed geometric and botanical marquetry wood inlay forming a lattice of diamonds accented with fine leaf buds. The fluid cabriole legs and the apron are further adorned with fine cast bronze mounts, featuring rocaille-themed garlands and sculpted figures at the shoulders ending in refined bronze sabots at the feet. The table remains in outstanding structural condition, with the original lacquer finish bright and fully intact.
