Antique Limoges Porcelain Box with Fragonard Scene Painting

Production Period The box was made in the late 19th or early 20th century, during the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) period. It represents the refined boudoir and dressing table culture, where each small item served as a decorative holder for ladies’ jewelry, letters, and keepsakes.

Maker and Historical Scene Inside the lid, a handwritten inscription identifying the painting’s theme has been preserved: “Le Chiffre d’Amour” D’après Fragonard / Décor main (The Love Letter / After Fragonard / Hand-painted). The central composition is an interpretation of the 1779 masterpiece by the renowned Rococo master Jean-Honoré Fragonard — a lady in a pink dress by a tree trunk, inscribing her lover’s initials, accompanied by a loyal dog. The surface of the lid also bears the original signature of the painter-decorator himself, Gaultier. On the base of the box is the historic green Limoges factory stamp, which attests to the item’s authenticity and origin among connoisseurs.

Material and Finish The box is made of high-quality, thin-walled white porcelain. Its oval body is coated in a soft sky blue background, with fragments of white, relief pearl and floral swag bands adorning the sides. The rim of the lid is accented with a delicate, shiny gold line. The box stands on four distinctively curved, sculptural feet, entirely covered in thick, shiny gilding.

Application and Condition This porcelain trinket box Limoges jewel box is a superb accent for a dressing table, dresser, or salon display cabinet. It is in excellent antique condition — the porcelain has no cracks or chips. The hand-painted decoration and the gold plating on the feet remain vibrant and intact, bringing a pleasant patina of age and centuries-old elegance to the room.

A Belle Époque Snapshot: Princess Mathilde Bonaparte (Princess Mathilde Bonaparte) sat quietly at her dressing table, where the afternoon Parisian light glided over fine silver hairbrushes and perfume bottles. In the corner of the room, next to the mirror, a small, bluish porcelain form glowed, its four gilded feet firmly holding the weight of a lady’s secrets above the tabletop. She did not touch the vessel, merely observed how, in the dim light, the pink-clad figure and small flowers on the lid seemed to freeze in a natural scene, as if Fragonard’s story breathed in the room with the afternoon breeze. The cool smoothness of the material and the warm spirit of the gilded details brought a cozy satisfaction to the boudoir, and this serene anticipation lingered in the salon long after the gentle evening glow had faded.
