Antique Limoges Porcelain Plates with Hand-Painted Hunting Birds
Period of Manufacture: These large decorative plates were made in the late 19th century, during the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) and the Historicism period. They represent the golden age of European hunting and game cuisine culture, when such large, shallow dishes served as prestigious decorations on the walls or in display cabinets of manor house dining rooms, hunting lodges, and gentlemen’s studies.
Manufacturer and Artist’s Signature: The bases of the plates bear the historical and clearly visible Limoges manufacturer’s mark M. de M. / France / Limoges. On the front of both plates, amidst the natural scenery and floral motifs, the original hand-painted signature of the artist DINVELLE is preserved. Limoges porcelain has been a hallmark of reliable quality and high status for centuries, and verified, signed hand-painted works by masters always maintain the highest value among collectors.
Material and Design: These antique porcelain limoges plates birds are crafted from dense, heavy, and resonant white porcelain. They feature a distinct, large 33 cm surface and a slightly undulating, relief baroque rim, accented with a pleasingly patinated gilding. Each of the two available plates depicts a different, unique hand-painted scene: one features a magnificent pair of pheasants among reeds, the other shows wild ducks in flight over aquatic plants. The paintings are executed in an exquisite style of realism, with delicate rendering of feather texture and the play of natural light.
Application and Condition: Such large plates, or wide decorative shallow bowls, make an outstanding accent for a classical salon, hunting room, or dining room interior. They look fantastic displayed symmetrically on a console table, sideboard, or mounted on a wall. The pieces are in excellent antique condition – the porcelain is free of cracks, chips, or signs of restoration. The hand-painted artwork remains vibrant, and the fine relief of gilded dots along the rim is unworn.
Belle Époque Snapshot: Thomas Mann slowly approached the window, where the afternoon light glided over the dark wood panels of the reading room. On the low mahogany console rested two wide, yellowish forms, on whose porcelain clarity the drawn lines of wings burned, frozen. He did not touch the vessels, but watched how the magnificent tones of pheasant feathers and the silhouettes of ducks in the reeds in the twilight caught the last sunbeams, as if time between these lines had stopped forever in nature’s silence. The cool weight of the material and the gleam of the gilded edges brought a cozy satisfaction to the room, and this calm anticipation remained in the study long after the pleasant afternoon glow had completely faded.
