Antique Limoges Porcelain Charger Plate with Hand-Painted Songbirds
Period of Manufacture: This impressive decorative plate was crafted in the late 19th century, during the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) and Historicism periods. It represents the flourishing of the finest European cabinet and salon porcelain art, when such large-format shallow plates (charger plates) served not as functional tableware, but as exquisite decorative pieces for the walls or display cabinets of manor houses, salons, and ladies’ boudoirs.
Manufacturer and Artist’s Signature: The base of the piece bears the historical and clearly visible mark of the Limoges manufacturer or decorator P. THABART / Limoges. On the front of the plate, in the lower left of the branch and flower composition, the original hand-painted signature of the artist-painter Biarin is preserved. Limoges porcelain has been a symbol of reliable quality and high status for centuries, and verified, signed hand-painted works by masters always maintain the highest value among collectors.
Material and Design: This vessel, dedicated to the motif of antique porcelain Limoges plate birds, is cut from dense, resonant, and thick white porcelain. It features a prominent, large 34 cm flat surface and a slightly wavy, relief Baroque-style rim, accented with a pleasingly patinated gilding. The scene is executed in an excellent mix of realism and Impressionism—against a gentle, pastel-toned natural background of sky and pink trees, a flock of seven songbirds is depicted perched on a blooming apple or wild rose branch. The painting is distinguished by the delicate rendering of feather texture and an exquisite atmosphere of spring nature.
Application and Condition: Such a large decorative plate is an excellent accent for a classic salon, bedroom, or dining room interior. It looks magnificent placed on a jewelry table, buffet surface, or hung on a wall (the historical wire hanger is already integrated on the back). The piece is in excellent antique condition—the porcelain has no cracks, chips, or signs of restoration. The hand-painted artwork remains vibrant and clean, and the delicate gold trim along the rim is unworn.
Belle Époque Snapshot: Thomas Mann slowly approached the window, where the afternoon light glided over the dark wood panels of the reading room. On the low mahogany console rested a wide, bright form, on whose porcelain’s clear smoothness burned a frozen line of painted wings and blooming flowers. He did not touch the vessel, but merely observed how the silhouettes of the birds and the garlands of pink apple blossoms in the twilight caught the last rays of the sun, as if a spring song between these lines had stopped forever in nature’s silence. The cool weight of the material and the gleam of the gilded edge brought a cozy satisfaction to the room, and this calm anticipation remained in the boudoir long after the beautiful afternoon glow had completely faded.
