Small Neo-Rococo armchair with armrests — Rococo revival, Western Europe, 2nd half of the 19th century

This charming small armchair with armrests (childrens armchair) is a Neo-Rococo (Rococo revival) piece in walnut, where the flowing grace of the Louis XV era has shrunk to a charming, intimate scale. The undulating cartouche back is crowned with a small rocaille carving — the work of a woodcarver. The upholstery is a luxurious red and gold jacquard fabric with a lattice, laurel wreath, and vine pattern, outlined with a row of decorative bronze nails; the upholstered cuff armrests and graceful cabriole legs echo the silhouette of large salon armchairs in miniature.

Period of creation, art style, era The armchair was made in the second half of the 19th century, when Neo-Rococo — the Rococo revival, which returned to the flowing, asymmetrical forms of Louis XV — flourished in Europe. Small armchairs were made at this time for children as well as decorative salon pieces — small masterpieces in which all the details of a large armchair were reproduced in miniature with the same care.

The scent of the garden and distant dog barks drifted through the window. Material and carving The frame is made of walnut with a warm, natural patina. The rocaille carving on the back crest, the volutes on the armrests, and the carving on the cabriole legs are true figurative carvings, dynamic and plastic even on a small scale. The red-gold jacquard fabric adds a luxuriously festive mood.

Condition The armchair is in good, stable antique condition with a natural patina of age on the wood. The jacquard upholstery has survived with wear appropriate to its age. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
