This impressive, large-scale hunting still life depicts a lavish composition of game and garden produce — a male wild duck with its characteristic dark head and greenish-yellow beak, lying on a white linen drapery, next to a darker, smaller game bird, juicy bunches of grapes, a pineapple, a melon, and a massive, gleaming copper pot. The work continues the great Flemish and nature morte tradition, where hunting bounty and an abundance of fruit speak of household wealth and nature’s generosity.

The painting belongs to the realistic hunting still life tradition, which flourished in Belgium and Northern France in the late 19th century and continued into the first half of the 20th century. Oil on canvas, with a convincing play of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) and rich, warm coloring — the deep, dark background highlights the duck’s white breast and the golden reflection of the copper vessel. Beyond the windowpane, the late autumn mist covered the canal water, and somewhere down the street, a carriage clattered over the wet cobblestones. In the depths of the room, on white linen, in the candlelight, the smooth, round surface of metal and the bluish iridescence of a bird’s wing suddenly gleamed, as if the coolness of the forest itself had crept into the warm room. His fingers momentarily glided over the cool, heavy edge, and somewhere deep inside he again felt the silence of that hunting morning, when the water was still mirror-smooth and the mist hung over the reeds. In this motionless abundance resided something of the lost year, which he so desperately wished to hold onto for just a moment longer.

Artist and signature

The painting is signed in the lower left corner (see photo) — “G.” followed by a surname. In its current state, the signature is not unambiguously decipherable, and the author cannot be reliably identified. The style of the work — the deep, warm dark tones in the background, the gleaming copper vessel with a strong light reflection, and the material, almost tangible texture of the game birds — indicates the Belgian or Northern realistic hunting still life tradition, directly inheriting the legacy of the Antwerp and Brussels academies and the spirit of the 17th-century Flemish old masters. Authentication is not included.
