Brass and wood wall cabinet with decorative fittings – Renaissance Revival
This unusual brass and wood wall cabinet (brass cabinet) is an exquisite piece crafted in the spirit of the Renaissance Revival, where a gleaming brass facade and warm-toned wood combine in a small yet impressive form. The cabinet door is covered by an intricately worked sheet brass panel with decorative fittings that mimic old wrought iron – almost like a miniature medieval chest or sacristy door.
Dimensions: height 33.5 cm · width 24.5 cm · depth 8 cm.
Period of Manufacture Late 19th century, Western Europe. The form and decoration refer to the aesthetic of the Renaissance Revival (Historicism), which revived medieval and Renaissance metalworking forms in the late 19th century.
Construction and Decoration The front of the cabinet is entirely covered by a sheet of brass, adorned with decorative fittings (pentures) featuring elaborate scrollwork and floral rosettes – they mimic Renaissance wrought iron hinge plates that once secured heavy doors. A decorative lock with lily and scroll ornamentation is centrally placed. The door is supported by a brass hinge. The casing is made of warm-toned wood with brass edging along the sides. Mounting holes are visible on the back, indicating wall attachment. The slim casing and decorative facade suggest the cabinet likely served as a storage for keys or small valuables.
Material Brass (sheet facade and cast fittings) and wood (casing); the item is notably heavy.
Condition Good condition consistent with age. The brass exhibits a beautiful, multi-coloured patina of time with an iridescent sheen characteristic of old brass. The wood retains its warm tone; minor signs of age are visible. The fittings retain their sharp detailing.
Application A decorative and functional wall cabinet – suitable for keys, small treasures, or as a distinctive accent in an entryway, study, or interior with a historical ambiance.
A Belle Époque Snapshot: The old housekeeper, who had managed the household of a Lyon silk merchant for thirty years, would approach the wall by the stairs each evening before retiring. Her fingers, roughened by years of work, found the familiar brass lock in the darkness even before the candlelight reached it. A click – the door opened, revealing a row of keys, each with its own story: the cellar, the silver cabinet, the late master’s study. She lingered for a moment, knowing the weight of each key and the door it unlocked. Then she closed the cabinet, took her candle, and went upstairs, leaving the brass to gleam quietly in the dark like a faithful guardian.
