Tall bronze altar candlestick with cherub masks — in Baroque style
An impressive and very heavy tall bronze candlestick (brass pricket candlestick), crafted in the ornate language of the Baroque style. It is a so-called pricket type altar candlestick — with a wide round cup and a central spike (pricket) for securing a large church candle. The stem is formed from two rhythms: the upper part is fluted, a section resembling a cannelated pen holder, while the middle and lower parts feature a shiny twisted (barley-twist) and openwork acanthus scroll engraving, creating a play of light and shadow in the metal.
The stand is supported by a massive tripod with three cherub masks (angel faces) between acanthus volutes, resting on lion’s paw feet — a typical Baroque motif that combines the celestial and the earthly. The brass/bronze is richly engraved with the visible hand of the craftsman; the metal has acquired a warm, deep patina.
A snapshot of the Baroque era: Before an early mass in Rome, the young Gian Lorenzo Bernini had lingered in the empty church, where the morning light had only just begun to filter through the high windows. He touched the cold, twisted surface and followed the acanthus scrolls upwards with his finger — to a place where a small, smiling child’s face emerged in the metal. The wax had not yet been lit, but he could already see how the flame above would reflect in the gold and how the entire form would sparkle. Footsteps sounded from somewhere behind the altar; he pulled his hand away and hurried off.
Period of creation. The candlestick is dated to the 19th century – early 20th century, made in the spirit of the historical Baroque style.
Application. An effective sacral and decorative item — as an altar or fireplace candlestick, as a floor candlestick by an entrance or stairs, or as a sculptural accent in an interior. The great height and weight lend solemnity to the space.
Condition. Good condition, appropriate for its age; natural patina on the metal. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
