Description
Gilded bronze fire dogs with fire vases – Louis XVI / Empire style, France
Price is for 2 pieces (pair).
These luxurious fire dogs (louis xvi chenets) are a noble work of gilded bronze, in the spirit of Louis XVI neoclassicism, while transitioning to Empire aesthetics. Each is crowned with a fire vase (cassolette) with a stylized flame top, swan neck handles, and a deep laurel garland – an antique urn motif that symbolized eternity and sacrificial fire in neoclassicism. The pedestals are decorated with acanthus rosettes, fluting, and square paterae; both dogs are connected by a curved frieze with a laurel and acorn garland and smaller urn tops. Cast iron rails for firewood have been preserved at the back.

Period of manufacture
The pair is made in the Louis XVI style tradition, based on ancient Roman and Greek forms – straight lines, fluting, laurel wreaths, and urns. This symmetrical, calm elegance later developed into Empire monumentalism. Fire dogs (chenets) with fire vases were the adornment of the most luxurious salons, combining practical function with representative dignity.
Manufacturer / signature / hallmark
No hallmark; the quality of modeling, the detail of the garlands, and the depth of gilding indicate a good bronze workshop in the neoclassical tradition.
Rarity and significance
Chenets pairs with fully preserved fire vases, garlands, and original gilding are a valuable find today – tops and garlands are easily damaged, and a complete pair is often broken up.
Application
The pair functions both in a functional fireplace and as a sculptural accent by the fireplace, on a console, or bookshelf. Their golden vases and garlands create a noble, photogenic detail in interior and object photography. An impressive gift for a fireplace owner, a lover and collector of neoclassicism or antiques.
Condition
Bronze vases, pedestals, garlands, and iron rails preserved; possible wear points on gilding, minor bronze losses or repairs, and iron corrosion consistent with age and function. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
Snapshot of the era, Clodion:
Sculptor Clodion held a small wax model by the workshop window, where the afternoon light illuminated the rounded shapes of the vases. His thumb smoothed the freshly formed laurel wreath – each leaf individually, patiently. Outside the window, Paris spoke of a new, stricter beauty returning to ancient sources. He smiled: the fire vase would never burn, but would always stand by the fire, like a silent memorial to ancient altars.
