This table is the most intimate genre of the Belle Époque era — not a representative salon table that demands space around it, but what the called a table de salon or table de milieu for the middle space: a table where one can leave a coffee cup, place a vase of flowers, where two or four people can sit in the afternoon. It is a table with character and without pretensions of grandeur — and that is precisely what makes it one of the most sought-after genres in the antique market.

The revival of the Louis XV style during the Belle Époque period created hundreds of thousands of joinery objects — but there is a huge difference in quality among them. This table belongs to the highest category: a serpentine contour line with a delicate edge profile, rocaille shells and floral carving in the center of the frieze with freely carved floral and leaf motifs on the sides, four cabriole legs with acanthus carving at the top, and — most importantly — cross stretchers with a central rocaille knot. This cross stretcher system is the highest luxury of Louis XV joinery: it is not a structural necessity, it is an aesthetic declaration. The knot in the center, with its deeply carved rocaille volume, is the sculptural culmination of this table.

Belle Époque — the “Beautiful Era” from 1871 to 1914. Around 1880, Claude Monet was just beginning to look for his first garden in Giverny — water lilies were not yet there. But such tables with floral carvings and curved legs already stood in the salons of country houses in Normandy and Île-de-France, from whose windows one could see almost the same gardens that Monet later painted. This table is from that same world.
