Antique baby carriage with large bassinet and drawing — Victorian style
This impressive, large-sized baby carriage is an outstanding and rare original work of historical transport design and applied art from the late 19th or early 20th century. The carriage stands out with its monumental, deep wooden bassinet, whose dark greenish sides are adorned with elegant, hand-applied gilded line decorations and a heraldic drawing in the shape of a shield. The carriage chassis is a skillful blacksmith’s work — a heavy, curved-line iron construction resting on huge, winding sheet iron springs and massive iron spoke wheels, ensuring an incomparably soft ride for its time. A high, wrought iron handle with an original, turned wooden or bone grip is mounted at the rear of the carriage, while a foldable, thick dark fabric canopy protects the front of the bassinet.
Period of manufacture The item is an authentic original work from the late 19th or very early 20th century, created at the end of the Victorian era or during the historicist period in Europe, when carriages of this scale were available only to families of the wealthiest social strata.
Rarity and significance Baby carriages of this format with a fully preserved original iron chassis, wheels, foldable canopy mechanism, and authentic paintwork are an extremely great rarity. They serve as an excellent testament to the attention and craftsmanship dedicated even to baby care items at the time, creating long-lasting objects for generations.
Application The carriage is a fantastic and sovereign collectible or decorative object. It would be a stunning centerpiece in a spacious manor hall, an antique photo studio, an exclusive children’s goods salon, or as a historical element in a private collection, instantly transporting the space to the noble and romantic era of the past.
Condition In very good and authentic historical condition with a distinct patina of age and use. The iron parts have natural surface corrosion, which only attests to their age, while the wooden bassinet and frame are sturdy. The fabric canopy and interior show natural wear and tear consistent with age. All mechanisms are authentic. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
Late 19th-century snapshot, theatre backstage (Dace Akmentiņa – real name Doroteja Šteinberga): Behind the heavy velvet curtains of the stage, the last applause still echoes, but in the corridors of the dressing rooms, the elated exhaustion of the premiere reigns, where the air is heavy, saturated with clouds of powder, drops of expensive perfume, and the smoke of burning wax candles. Passionate admirers with huge baskets of flowers flow from the salons of the Riga and Liepāja theaters to the backstage, and every object in this excited space momentarily becomes part of that grand, theatrical, and romantic festive atmosphere, where the classical palace style merges with living emotion.
Theatre diva Dace Akmentiņa (Dace Akmentiņa – real name Doroteja Šteinberga), dressed in a heavy silk gown, pauses for a moment in the dimly lit corner of the corridor, where the magnificent, heavy baby carriage is placed as a luxurious prop after the just-performed play. Her fingers lightly glide over the cool, curved wrought iron supports and the dark wooden bassinet, on the side of which, in the faint candlelight, the hand-painted gilded shield mysteriously gleams. This majestic, stately form stands in the space as a noble and silent witness to hours when even the most ordinary lines of life acquire an aristocratic shimmer and an unforgettable story in the light of the theatre backstage.
