Description
Bronze Wall Sconce with Pierced Backplate — Neoclassical / Louis XVI Style, France or Belgium, circa 1880–1900
A large and finely cast bronze wall sconce featuring a fully pierced (ajouré) backplate decorated with rocaille scrolls, acanthus leaves, rosette medallions and a ribbon-and-tassel lower finial. The central boss carries concentric geometric ornament — triangular friezes and bead mouldings — typical of high-quality and Belgian bronze foundry work of the 1870s–1900s. Three curved candle arms terminate in acanthus-capped bobeches fitted with new white candle sleeves. The piece belongs to the productive tradition of Belle Époque decorative bronzes, when Parisian and Liège workshops supplied Europe’s haute bourgeoisie with interiors of remarkable refinement. No maker’s mark; original copper wiring on the reverse suggests early electrification. Electrical installation must be inspected before use. Grande applique murale à trois bras en bronze doré, dotée d’un fond entièrement ajouré composé de rinceaux, feuilles d’acanthe, médaillons à rosettes et d’un motif de ruban-frange en partie basse. Le médaillon central porte des frises géométriques concentriques — triangles et perles — caractéristiques des fonderies es et belges de la fin du XIXe siècle. Pas de marque de fabricant ; câblage cuivre d’origine visible au dos, témoin d’une électrification ancienne. À faire vérifier par un électricien avant utilisation. L’état de la pièce est entièrement reflété dans les photographies.
