Art Déco Bedside Cabinet with Walnut Veneer — France / Italy, approximately 1925–1940

This compact yet remarkably expressive cabinet is an authentic piece of the Art Déco era — the period that marked a radical departure from Belle Époque ornamentalism toward geometric clarity, material honesty and elegant minimalism. Dating to approximately 1925–1940, it belongs to the golden and tragic interwar years when Montparnasse and Montmartre were home to a generation that changed art history forever.

The piece is finished in walnut placage — a veneer in which the natural wood grain forms hypnotic horizontal wave lines across the entire facade. This grain pattern is not incidental decoration: it is the quintessence of Art Déco aesthetics, where the natural beauty of the material itself becomes the ornament. The form is curved, bombé-style, with a central vertical division emphasised by a projecting column element. Above: a raised shelf zone with a wavy gallery and one small drawer. Legs: massive, geometric, with bronze corner mounts. Handles: brass rosettes in a rocaille pattern, adding a gentle retro note to the modern silhouette.

A Belle Époque moment. In 1932 at Montparnasse, in the café La Rotonde, Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso sat at the same table — for the first time since their argument about Surrealism. That evening, one of them returned to an apartment on Rue Cherche-Midi, where a bedside cabinet exactly like this one stood beside the bed. On it lay a sketchbook and a small bottle of ink. By morning the sketchbook was full. What was in it — no one knows. That was their way of working.

No maker’s mark is present. The quality of the veneer, precision of the bronze corner mounts and the finish of the curved door surfaces point to a mid-to-high-end or Italian manufacturer of the interwar period.
