This outstanding chest of drawers was made on the eve of the Belle Époque — in the aesthetic of circa 1860–1880 — and is one of the most exquisite examples of furniture from the Napoleon III era, combining two artistic dialects in one object with rare harmony.

The Napoleon III style — the aesthetic of the Second Empire — was the first major European historicism that deliberately synthesized several historical styles simultaneously: the grandeur of Louis XIV, the classical elegance of Louis XVI, and the ornamental richness of the Renaissance. This chest of drawers is a precise example of this synthesis — the side panels with filet inlay framing and geometric parquetry in the corners speak the language of Louis XVI; while the marquetry composition on the doors on an ebonized wood background — with an oval central medallion surrounded by a multi-layered black and white and gilt bronze laurel wreath, and peony/daisy floral compositions in the corners — is a pure decorative triumph of the Napoleon III era.

This piece belongs to that fertile stylistic moment when Historicism, in its mature phase, produced its most magnificent works — before the Belle Époque aesthetic had fully formed, but already with all the conviction of its material richness.

Charlotte Perriand was not yet born. Jacques Offenbach’s opera Orpheus in the Underworld was in its eleventh season in Paris. The ladies of the Second Empire court kept their wardrobes in cabinets just like this one, and Paris at that time was the most luxurious city in the world — transformed by Haussmann’s grand renovations, glittering and vibrant.

No visible manufacturer’s mark. The piece was created in a top-class ébénisterie workshop — as evidenced by the combination of several particularly exquisite elements. The central marquetry on the doors — a full floral vase with peonies, daisies, and acanthus leaf spirals on a black ebonized background, enclosed by a multi-layered oval with a gilt bronze laurel wreath — requires extreme skill and the collaboration of several specialists. The Boulle-type ebonized elements (black wood with gold marquetry) combined with mahogany veneer and filet inlay are a hallmark of the highest class of Parisian workshops of the Napoleon III era. The gilt bronze ormolu appliqués — mascaron corner ornaments, acanthus and floral friezes, laurel wreath door surrounds, oak leaf corner rosettes, and flower basket leg decorations — are executed with high sculptural quality. The green marble top (vert de mer or vert d’Estours type) with a wavy profile is original and perfectly preserved.
