Its deep, black mirror-like brilliance reflects the flickering light of stearin candles, illuminating the fragile figures painted on the curved cylinder roll, which seem to rest quietly amidst the backstage bustle. Slender, powdered fingers, which in just a moment will grasp a dramatic letter on stage, lightly touch the cool, smooth lacquered surface, its golden contours catching the soft morning light.

The air is thick with the sweet scent of amber, cosmetic powder, and freshly cut roses mingling with the warm breath of burning wax. Three stately, finely brushed mythical birds with raised wings and vibrant pink blossom clusters within their panels bring an exotic Far Eastern mystique and a calm balance to the room. This exceptional antique Chinoiserie black lacquer cylinder bureau was crafted in France in the mid-20th century. The desk represents a high-quality historical reproduction of the Far Eastern style, paying tribute to the 18th and 19th-century European high-society obsession with oriental aesthetics, known as Chinoiserie and Japonisme design movements.

The highlighting feature of this bureau secretary is the spectacular quality of its multi-layered black lacquer and hand-painted artistry. The main curved cylinder shutter features a detailed narrative scene depicting three Japanese cranes (symbols of longevity and peace) among blooming sakura branches and pines. The top horizontal surface is decorated with a fine songbird perched among green foliage, while the sides and drawers are enhanced with delicate floral sprays. Opening the cylinder automatically glides out a smooth black lacquered writing surface, revealing an inner cabinet with smaller drawers and open compartments. Below the writing tier, three large storage drawers with brass ring pulls complete the structure. The piece is notably heavy and robust, standing upon fluted legs. It remains in excellent structural and visual condition.
