This commode belongs to the finest furniture genre of the Belle Époque — the “Beautiful Era”: a commode en bombe with ormolu bronze fittings and a marble top. The era lasted from 1871 to 1914, and it was during this period that France produced the most consistently high-quality commodes, reproducing and interpreting the traditions of Louis XV and Louis XVI with new technical capabilities and artistic freedom.

This piece belongs to that exceptionally fertile transitional moment when the bombe shape of the Louis XV style — the curved front, sinuous legs, asymmetrical bottom tablier — still held its proportions, but the discipline of Louis XVI already brought a symmetrical bronze program and marqueterie à chevrons veneer. Both aesthetics coexist here in one object with rare harmony.

Kingwood or bois de violette — rosewood — was the favorite veneer material of the Versailles cabinetmakers of the 18th century. Its intensely reddish-brown tones with violet undertones make it the most visually striking European wood, supplied to France from Brazil. The Belle Époque cabinetmakers used it as a deliberate historical reference — kingwood commodes were an unmistakable signal of the continuation of court tradition.

These workshops not only copied 18th-century prototypes but also created their own bronze programs, sometimes surpassing the originals in their plastic richness.
