Louis XVI Style Black Wooden Demi-Lune Console
Period of Manufacture The console was crafted in the late 19th century, during the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) and Historicism periods. It is designed in the aesthetic of Neoclassicism, or Louis XVI style, which, in contrast to the flowing lines of previous periods, is dominated by strict symmetry, straight, architectural constructions, and clear geometric forms, perfectly suited for the salons of European townhouses.
Material and Design The piece is a stable and high-quality artisan work made from dense wood. It features a classic and practical demi-lune shape, allowing its sides and back to fit perfectly against a room’s wall. The surface and lower base of the item are coated in a deep, matte black color, which subtly reveals the natural relief and grain of the wood through chiaroscuro. The console’s visual verticality is maintained by four slender, distinctively turned legs with decorative rings and square base blocks at the bottom. The two-tier construction provides both a spacious top surface and an additional shelf at the base for stability and item placement.
Application and Value This type of antique black wooden console table furniture serves as an exceptional and highly versatile interior accent. Due to its compact dimensions (only 28 cm deep), it is ideally suited for narrow hallways, entryways, or ladies’ boudoirs as a side table. The console functions as an elegant stand for an antique silver planter, a porcelain vase, a bronze clock, or greenery, bringing a balanced and graphically clean substance to the space.
Condition The piece is in excellent and solid antique condition. The wooden construction and turned legs are fully stable, without breaks or structural looseness. The matte black finish remains even and sound. A small, natural historical use scratch is visible on the top surface, which does not detract from the overall visual appeal but maintains the item’s authentic and centuries-old character. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
Belle Époque Snapshot: Edvard Munch slowly approached the window, where the cool, Scandinavian afternoon light glided across the wooden panels of the workshop. In the corner of the room, nestled against the light-colored wall, stood the silent, slender silhouette of a black wooden demi-lune console. Its matte and polished smoothness caught the afternoon shadows, maintaining a graphic tranquility in the space. He did not touch the piece, merely observing how the lines of the four turned legs and the base caught the last rays of the sun in the semi-darkness, as if time in this room had stopped in the embrace of nature’s quietude forever. The cool smoothness of the material and the warm spirit of the wood brought a cozy satisfaction to the space, and this quiet anticipation lingered in the boudoir long after the gentle evening glow had completely faded.
