Antique three-tiered wooden stand with three porcelain plates (cherubs)

Period of Manufacture This salon set was made in the late 19th century, during the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) period. It is designed in the classic Louis XVI style aesthetic, when in European city homes and manors, such three-tiered étagères served as decorative salon accents for displaying fine pastries, fruits, or collectibles.

Material and Design The stand’s frame is made of dense, fine, and high-quality walnut or stained fruitwood with a silky sheen. Its structure features a gracefully curved top with a turned wooden handle for easy movement and stable, winding legs at the base. Each of the three round wooden surfaces is adorned with a fine, lighter wood inlay (wood mosaic) band that precisely follows the contours of the shelves. A special mechanism at the back allows the shelves to be folded, characteristic of authentic functional designs of that era.

Set Contents and Decorative Elements The set includes three antique, perfectly matched porcelain plates with distinctively wavy and embossed Baroque-style edges, accented with pleasingly patinated gilding. Each plate features a beautiful, multi-colored painting in a romantic style at its center, depicting three playful angel figures (cherubs) — in one scene, they are amidst golden wheat stalks against a natural background; in another, they are above the clouds.

Condition The set is in excellent antique condition. The wooden stand is firm, stable, and fully functional. The porcelain plates are free of cracks, chips, or signs of restoration. The gilding and central motifs on the porcelain surfaces remain vibrant and intact, with only minimal, natural age patina, which only enhances the ensemble’s historical substance and authenticity.

Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) Snapshot: Katharina Schratt slowly approached the window, where the afternoon sun glided over the fine chairs of the Viennese salon. In the corner of the room, next to the light sofa, stood a slender silhouette of dark wood, its three round levels softly shimmering with white porcelain waves. She did not touch the object, only watched as the shapes of small, painted wings froze in the darkness between the golden edges, as if three children of nature had fallen asleep forever, embraced by the clouds. The cool smoothness of this silky surface and the warm tone of the wood brought a cozy satisfaction to the room, and this anticipation remained in the boudoir long after the pleasant afternoon glow had faded.
