Antique Val Saint Lambert crystal vase on a gilded base

Manufacturing period This luxurious salon vase was crafted in the early 20th century, during the nascent Art Deco and historicist period. It represents the peak achievement period of Belgian glass masters, when the combination of crystal and gilded bases was a particularly sought-after element in the interiors and on the festive tables of wealthy European citizens.

Manufacturer and authenticity On the upper part of the vase, a partially preserved, original paper manufactory label with the characteristic star and fragment of the manufacturer’s name (IMG_0621.jpg) is visible, confirming its belonging to the world-renowned Val Saint Lambert house. Val Saint Lambert (founded in 1826), the official supplier to the Belgian royal court, is known worldwide for its finest and clearest lead crystal. Interestingly, beneath the gilded base, a historical black label from a Belgian jewelry and watch salon has also been preserved: “Huis Buysse / Uurwerken Juwelen / Steenstraat 54 / 8000 Brugge” (IMG_0629.jpg), which adds an additional story of travel and origin to the item.

Material and technique The item is substantial and heavy, indicating the highest density and substance of lead crystal. The vase body is a masterpiece of handcraftsmanship — the upper part is adorned with sharp, vertical facets that transition into a rhythmic and very deep grid of diamond cuts in the middle section. This cut maximizes light refraction, making the crystal literally sparkle in the sunlight. The lower part of the body is enclosed and supported by a massive, smooth, and mirror-polished gold-colored metal (bronze or brass) pedestal.

Application and value With a height of over 28 cm, this vase is an ideal and representative salon centerpiece. It is exceptionally suitable for displaying tall, luxurious floral arrangements (e.g., lilacs or roses) on a console table, sideboard, or large dining table, immediately bringing a warm, aristocratic glow to the room.

Condition The vase is in excellent antique condition. The clear crystal has no chips, cracks, or signs of glass clouding (sick glass), which is rare for items of this age. The gilded metal base is firm, stable, and shiny, maintaining the item’s true value.

Snapshot of the era: Edvard Munch slowly approached the window, where the cool afternoon light slid across the wooden panels of the workshop. In the corner of the room, catching the sun’s rays, shimmered a heavy and clear crystal form, its deeply cut facets catching the light and casting sharp reflections on the dark tabletop. He did not touch the object, only watched as the curves of the gilded base firmly held this transparent weight in the semi-darkness, as if a guardian of light had stopped time in that space forever. The cool smoothness of the glass and the warm spirit of the gilded surface brought a cozy satisfaction to the salon, and this calm anticipation remained in the boudoir long after the last rays had completely faded.
