Ebonized fireplace screen with tapestry and bronze decorations — Historicism
This impressive ebonized fireplace screen (firescreen tapestry) is an expressive work from the Historicism era, in which a late 19th-century master combines Renaissance revival architecture with the gentle warmth of a Rococo gallant scene. The black, deeply polished wood forms a rigid, almost architectural frame that encloses a small theatrical stage.
Dimensions: height 135 cm · width 78 cm · depth 30 cm.
Period of manufacture Late 19th century (circa 1880–1890), Central Europe. Ebonized wood furniture with gilt accents and woven panels were characteristic of Historicism salon interiors, when wealthy households revived the luxury of earlier centuries.
Construction and decor The central panel features a woven tapestry with a gallant fête galante scene: ladies and gentlemen in a greenish-golden landscape, reminiscent of the tradition of Antoine Watteau and François Boucher. The panel is framed by two turret-like columns with gilded Corinthian capitals, and the crenellated top bears a gilded bronze mascaron — a bearded grotesque face with a lion-like mane — and a central urn-shaped finial. At the bottom is a gilded bronze rosette button-shaped decoration. The leg cutouts and the wavy plinth line give the object a light, almost festive silhouette.
Material Ebonized (black painted and polished) wood, gilded bronze fittings (ormolu), woven tapestry panel.
Condition Good condition consistent with age. Minor signs of age are visible — surface wear and individual paint defects that indicate authentic age. The tapestry has retained its warm, faded tones.
