Neo-Rococo Chair Set with Carved Roses – Walnut, Europe, 2nd half of the 19th century
This elegant Neo-Rococo chair set (rococo chairs) consists of three pieces – one larger, substantial armchair with armrests (fauteuil) and two chairs without armrests. All three seating pieces are united by lush carved crests featuring a blooming rose in the center, framed by acanthus leaves and volutes, as well as graceful, curved cabriole legs. The warm orange, finely woven upholstery adds a vibrant, contemporary accent to the set, while preserving the nobility of 19th-century forms.
Armchair: height 110 cm, width 65.5 cm, seat height 46.5 cm, seat depth 57 cm. Chairs (2 pcs.): height 96 cm, width 48.5 cm, seat height 50 cm, seat depth 40.5 cm.
Period of Manufacture, Artistic Style, Era
The set represents the Neo-Rococo (Second Rococo) style, which flourished in Europe in the second half of the 19th century, reviving the curved lines and natural motifs of the 18th-century Louis XV period. The frames are crafted from walnut or mahogany with a warm, deep patina. The roses and foliage on the crests of the backrests are true wood carvings, not mass-produced finishes – each flower form is rendered plastically and lifelike.
Snapshot of the Neo-Rococo Era: Johann Strauss paused for a moment at the door of a Viennese salon, while outside the window, the new facades of the Ringstrasse shimmered in the evening light. In the semi-darkness of the room, against the wall, the contours of curved forms and the sheen of dark wood quietly gleamed – wreaths of roses that seemed woven into the wood itself. His fingers briefly brushed over the cool, smooth top edge of the backrest, feeling the relief of the carved flowers beneath, and somewhere in his mind, the first bars of a waltz were already sounding. In this cozy yet refined play of forms resided all the joie de vivre of that era – light, music, and unhurried, elegant conversation before the ball.
Manufacturer and Mark
The set was crafted in a European artisan workshop in the second half of the 19th century; there is no manufacturer’s stamp or mark. The quality of the handiwork – the execution of the carvings and the harmony of proportions – indicates experienced masters.
Rarity and Significance
Surviving Neo-Rococo sets with an armchair and matching chairs are increasingly difficult to find, as sets were often separated over the years. Here, all three pieces retain a unified stylistic coherence and coordinated upholstery, making them a complete, harmonious ensemble.
Application in Interiors, Design, and Photography
The set makes a striking accent in a living room, bedroom, lady’s boudoir, or a representative study. The warm orange upholstery fits perfectly into both classic and boldly eclectic contemporary interiors, where antique form meets vibrant color. The combination of dark wood and warm fabric is conducive to photography and interior styling.
Gift and Personalization
An elegant gift for an antique furniture enthusiast or for a new home – a set that is both a usable piece of furniture and a testament to history.
Condition
The set is in good overall condition, with a lively, warm wood patina. The upholstery has been renewed with high-quality, finely woven orange fabric. Normal age-related wear is visible on the wooden frames – individual minor scratches and small areas of abrasion consistent with the age of the items. The backrests show careful construction and carved profiling on the reverse (see photos). The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
