Neo-Rococo Reading Chair — A Carved Rococo Armchair in Walnut

This large, low and deep high-backed seat is a rococo armchair that cradles the sitter like a soft basin and represents the Neo-Rococo strand of the Historicism era at its most enveloping. On the crest a woodcarver created a rich carving — winding roses, a coquille (shell) motif and acanthus leaves — while the walnut frame flows down into graceful cabriole legs with a brass-nailed border.

The Carving and Comfort of This Rococo Armchair

Neo-Rococo snapshot: Marcel Proust (Marcel Proust) entered the dim apartment on the Boulevard Haussmann and paused for a moment. His gaze slowly caressed the master’s carving — the winding roses and shell form that, in the fading evening light, seemed almost alive. Then he yielded and sank deep into the soft, enveloping form as into a warm bath, and the gentle velvet pressed quietly against him like a sun-warmed summer meadow. In the room there was only the rustle of paper beneath his fingers and the distant clatter of carriages on the cobblestones. In this flowing, caressing form lived a deep, almost forgotten peace — that elusive sense of happiness the writer spent his life trying to hold within his endless garlands of sentences.

The chair is made of walnut in a warm, reddish, darkly polished tone and dates to around 1880–1900. The chief artistic value lies in the crest carving: the expressive coquille, the woven roses and unfurling acanthus are the genuine work of a woodcarver. With its large, low seat and tall back, this rococo armchair makes a striking accent — ideal for reading by a window or as a throne-like seat in a stately salon.

The chair remains in good, sturdy condition, with fresh striped olive-and-gold velvet upholstery and a decorative brass-nail trim. The surfaces keep a noble dark patina with some signs of age and use. The condition is fully reflected in the photographs.
