Description

Louis XVI armchairs with armrests — Louis XVI style, France, second half of the 19th century

This elegant pair of armchairs (louis xvi armchairs) is a work of style in walnut, characterized by the moderation, symmetry, and vertical lightness of classicism. The rectangular backrest is framed by fluted columns with pinecone-shaped finials and fine carved rosettes in the square corners, created by a skilled woodcarver; the top edge of the backrest is finished with a gadrooned ribbon border. The upholstery is luxurious blue with gold-cut velvet (velours ciselé) with a damask and valance pattern, outlined by a decorative row of bronze nails; the fluted, turned conical legs and upholstered cuff armrests complete the stately silhouette.

Dimensions (each armchair): height 97.5 cm, width 62.5 cm, seat height 39 cm, seat depth 48 cm.

Period of creation, art style, era The armchairs were made in the second half of the 19th century, when the revival of the style flourished in France — a return to 18th-century classicism after the abundance of Rococo curves. This style is characterized by a straight, architectural structure: fluted legs like antique columns, symmetry, rosettes, pinecones, and ribbon motifs. It was the language of the salons of the haute bourgeoisie and aristocracy — restrained yet refined.

Snapshot of the era: Architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel entered the salon near Versailles and, before sitting down, scanned the verticals of the backrest’s fluting with his eyes — they echoed his own rows of columns. The evening gold lay on the parquet floor, and the scent of mown grass wafted from the garden. The form on which he settled was as straight and moderate as a good calculation of proportions, and he smiled, for here the craftsman had understood the same thing he himself sought in stone: that beauty begins with measure.

Material and carving The frame is made of walnut with a warm, natural patina. The pinecone finials, corner rosettes, gadrooned ribbon border, and fluted legs are true figurative and ornamental carving, executed with the precision characteristic of classicism. The blue and gold cut velvet fabric with a damask pattern adds a luxurious, almost theatrical contrast to the warm wood.

Rarity and significance A matched pair of armchairs in the same style is valuable — two armchairs together form a symmetrical salon composition that has always been the heart of a classical interior.

Condition The armchairs are in good, stable antique condition with a natural patina of age on the wood. The cut velvet upholstery has been preserved with wear appropriate to the period. The condition of the items is fully reflected in the photographs.

Application in interior design The pair will be perfect for a living room, boudoir, or by the fireplace, in a classical or eclectic interior. Two symmetrically placed armchairs create an elegant, salon-like accent. The price is for 2 pieces (set — paire).
