Neo-Rococo salon suite — sofa and chairs, ebonized wood, second half of the 19th century

This exquisite six-piece salon suite (salon set) — a large sofa, two fauteuil with and three — represents the Neo-Rococo direction of the Historicism era in the Louis Philippe style. All pieces have a unified ebonized wooden frame with gracefully curved balloon-shaped backs, crowned with coquille and rocaille carvings created by a woodcarver, and the entire ensemble flows down into elegant cabriole legs. The pinkish wine-red floral damask with a light pink pattern gives the set a warm, festive salon tone.

Period of manufacture and art style

Historicism (Neo-Rococo, Louis Philippe style), approximately 1860–1880, Europe. In the mid and second half of the 19th century, the lightness of 18th-century Rococo lines was revived in a more restrained, but no less elegant form, and it was precisely such salon suites that became the heart of the bourgeois living room — a place for gathering for conversation, music, and tea.

Neo-Rococo (Rococo revival) snapshot: George Sand entered her Nohant living room and paused for a moment while guests were still gathered around the fireplace. Late afternoon light streamed through the window, gliding over the park trees, where dusk was already falling. In the depths of the room, in the shadows, smoothly curved, black outlines gently emerged along the wall — several slender, undulating forms, standing in a coordinated row like silent waiters, and the gleam of dark wood shimmered at their tops. Her fingers briefly glided over the cool, smooth curve of the backrest, and the flowers of the pink fabric seemed to blossom at the touch. In this harmonious group of forms resided a warm, social anticipation — precisely the sense of community that the writer so loved when friends, musicians, and like-minded people met in her home.

Material and carving

The suite is made with an ebonized wooden frame, whose deep, almost black tone effectively highlights the pink damask. The backrests are crowned with carvings — a symmetrical coquille and foliage motif, the work of a woodcarver. The curved cabriole legs and the undulating front edge of the seat continue the unified rocaille rhythm in all six pieces.

Rarity and significance

A complete, coordinated six-piece salon suite with a unified frame and upholstery is rare today — most often such sets are separated over time. Here, the sofa, chairs with and them have remained together as a unified ensemble.
