“Limoges” porcelain plates with romantic motifs and a burgundy border

Rococo escapism, Marie Antoinette: In the blooming gardens of her private retreat – the Petit Trianon village – far from the strict protocol of the court of Versailles, Queen Marie Antoinette enjoyed afternoon tea. Porcelain plates, reflecting her beloved pastoral and romantic aesthetic, were placed on a delicate, white-painted wooden table among blooming rose bushes.

The scenes depicted in the center of the plates – elegantly dressed lovers resting carefree in the shade of trees – were a mirror of her own longing for a simple yet aesthetically complete life. The scenes inspired by the artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard literally breathe with the lightheartedness, love, and gallant flirtation of the 18th century. The dark red (burgundy) border, contrasting with the snow-white porcelain and rich gilding, provided a regal and stable frame for this pastoral lightness.

For the queen, these dishes were not just practical items; they were like small, painted theater stages. Each meal became a visual delight and a reminder of a time when art served to celebrate beauty, dreams, and romantic illusions.

Introduction and origin These small plates are a classic example of “Limoges” porcelain, created in honor of the 18th-century Rococo painting tradition. The stamps “LIMOGES FRANCE” and “PORCELAINES D’ART VINCENT LIMOGES” are visible on the bottom, confirming their high quality and origin from the famous Limoges region (mid-20th century).

Design and decor The design of the plates stands out with an extremely romantic and detailed decor. Each plate features a different, finely crafted motif in the “Fragonard” style in its center, depicting 18th-century aristocratic couples (knights and ladies or “princes and princesses”) in romantic natural landscapes. The borders of the plates are adorned with a deep, aristocratic burgundy color, covered with a luxurious, filigree gold lace and acanthus leaf ornament.

Application Due to their 19 cm diameter, these plates are ideal for serving desserts, cakes, or delicate snacks. They also serve excellently as wall decor or a luxurious interior accent in a classic, romantic, or shabby chic style room.

Condition Excellent vintage condition. The porcelain has no chips, cracks, or dents. The colors in the central motifs, the burgundy border, and the gilding are well preserved. Only very minimal, almost imperceptible signs of natural use are visible. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
