“Limoges” porcelain plates with game motifs and burgundy border

Men’s conversations in the hunting lodge, Ernest Hemingway: In the hunting room of his friend’s country manor, where the air was filled with the aroma of fireplace smoke, leather armchairs, and old cognac, the writer Ernest Hemingway relaxed after a long day in the forest. On the heavy oak table, next to discarded leather gloves and hunting trophies, lay “Limoges” porcelain plates. The snacks served on them had already been tasted, but his gaze lingered on the delicate drawings – a deer, pheasants, and a running hare seemed to have stepped out of his own adventure stories.

The deep burgundy border and the rich gold filigree gave the plates their masculine and aristocratic elegance, fitting for a classic hunters’ club. These dishes were not just decoration; they were storytellers. Each image served as the beginning of a new conversation about nature, survival, and the beauty hidden in the silence of the forest. For Hemingway, who valued the authenticity of life, this exquisite masterpiece embodied the ideal balance between the harshness of nature and man-made luxury.

Introduction and origin These four small plates are a classic example of “Limoges” porcelain. The stamps “LIMOGES FRANCE” and “PORCELAINES D’ART VINCENT LIMOGES” are visible on the bottom, confirming their high quality and origin from the famous Limoges region. Such decorative plates with hunting and nature themes (game plates) were very popular in Europe in the mid-20th century, bringing elements of nature into fine dining rooms.

Design and decor The design of the plates stands out with its expressive color contrast and detailed drawings. The center of each plate on a white background depicts a different motif of forest fauna – a deer at the edge of the forest, a pheasant with a hen, a hare in a winter landscape, and a grouse. The drawings are made in a delicate, realistic style. The borders of the plates are adorned with a deep and rich burgundy color, covered with a luxurious, filigree gold lace and acanthus leaf ornament. The gold rim perfectly complements the overall aristocratic design.

Application These plates (19 cm in diameter) are ideal for serving appetizers or desserts at special country-style dinners or hunting banquets. They will also serve as wonderful decorative elements (hung on the wall or placed in a display cabinet) in a hunting lodge, country manor, or classic men’s study.

Condition Excellent vintage condition. The porcelain has no chips, cracks, or dents. The colors in the central motifs, the burgundy border, and the gilding are well preserved. Only very minimal, almost imperceptible signs of natural use are visible. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
