A snapshot of the Napoleon III style, by Liliya Shtengele: A sweet, intoxicating silence reigned in the theatre dressing room before the second act, when the hurried footsteps and backstage instructions momentarily subsided. The air was thick with the scent of powder, theatrical makeup, and freshly opened flowers, while on a small table stood a luxurious, slightly flared porcelain set, its gilded edges softly reflecting the light from the mirror.

The actress, still clad in a heavy silk and lace costume, sat down at the table, leaning lightly against the back of her chair. Her delicate fingers slowly and habitually traced the plastically fluted surface of the milk jug and sugar bowl, allowing her to feel the cool, flawless smoothness of the porcelain, adorned with delicate, hand-painted bouquets of roses and wildflowers.

This brief moment between two different lives — the passion of the stage and private intimacy — demanded peace. Drinking tea from this exquisite set, which carried the elegance and lightness of the Second Empire, restored her strength and that unwavering inner poise with which she could conquer the hearts of the audience time and again.

porcelain set with floral motifs — Napoleon III style

This wonderful and rare porcelain set, comprising a teapot, sugar bowl, and milk jug, is an outstanding example of decorative art, created in the magnificent Napoleon III (Second Empire) style. The vessels have a very unusual, downward-flaring and plastically fluted silhouette, reminiscent of a bell or a stylized tulip shape. The white porcelain surfaces are adorned with striking, polychrome floral motifs — delicate bouquets of yellow roses and wildflowers — complemented by rich, hand-applied gold gilding on the rims and unique, looped handles.

Period of Manufacture The set dates from the late 19th / early 20th century. This period in Limoges porcelain tradition was characterized by high craftsmanship and a free interpretation of historical styles, combining classical elegance with luxurious, romantic floral decors.

Manufacturer / Signature / Mark A clearly legible green manufacturer’s mark “G&D FRANCE” is present on the base of the vessels — this is the legendary Limoges company Gérard, Dufraisseix & Abbot (historically associated with Royal Limoges), which was one of the most notable and highest quality porcelain manufacturers of its time.

Application This exquisite set is ideal for serving elegant afternoon tea, or as a proud and eye-catching accent on a display shelf or a classic dining table, bringing with it the true atmosphere of a salon.

Condition The set has been preserved in very good historical condition. The porcelain is intact, without cracks or chips. The gilding on the rims shows natural, slight age-related wear in places, which only attests to the true age and authenticity of the vessels. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
