Antique wooden washstand with jug and bowl set

Period of manufacture This washstand was made in the late 19th century, approximately around 1880–1900, in keeping with the aesthetic of Historicism and late Louis Philippe styles. It is a magnificent and complete piece for a lady’s bedroom or a manor house boudoir from an era when such furniture was an integral part of everyday comfort.

Material and Design The stand is made of high-quality, solid mahogany or warm-toned beech wood. The tabletop features gracefully curved side rests, turned elegant legs, and an additional shelf at the bottom for towels or a water bucket. The tabletop has a precisely cut round recess where the large bowl is securely placed. The set of vessels is made of fine, ivory-colored porcelain or semi-porcelain, decorated with ornate autumn pink chrysanthemum or dahlia floral motifs and a delicate gold rim. The set also includes two small original toilet vessels.

Application and Value Complete sets like this one, with their original wooden stand, are extremely rare on today’s antique market, as ceramics and wood rarely survive together for a century. This piece of furniture is a ready and impressive interior accent for decorating a historic house, guesthouse, or manor.

Condition and Defects (Honest Assessment) The item is sold in authentic condition with historical defects described honestly and openly. The porcelain parts show signs of age and use, with cracks: one clearly visible crack extends across the rim and base of the large bowl, and a fixed crack is visible inside the jug. The wooden tabletop has a natural crack, and the lacquer finish has natural, antique scratches and water marks, which only enhance the item’s centuries-old charm and prove it is not a modern imitation.

Belle Époque Snapshot: Theodor Fontane slowly approached the window, where the morning light had just dispersed the garden mist. In the corner of the room stood quietly a heavy, dark wooden silhouette, its round nest calmly holding a vessel adorned with pink flowers, containing the night’s coolness. He did not touch the object, only watched as a thin, frozen line of crack on the bowl’s rim caught the first sharp ray of sun, as if telling of irrevocably passing time. The smooth porcelain surface and the pleasant warmth of the wood lent the room a cozy satisfaction, and this anticipation lingered in the boudoir long after the footsteps in the corridor had faded.
