This elegant table de jeu — a games table — is one of the most refined objects of the Belle Époque bourgeois salon. The Louis XV style here sounds in its classic register: the serpentine (en arbalète) curved front, slender sabre-type legs with cambré curvature, walnut marquetry banding on the apron sides. The table belongs to that sophisticated category of furniture where form and function merge into a single artistic act: closed — it is an elegant console with a chess surface; open — a fully functional card and games table for four.
The chess marquetry is executed with exceptional precision — rosewood (palissandre) and maple (érable) alternate across 64 squares with a vivid colour contrast and a natural wood-grain ornament in every cell. This is not simple veneer application — it is ébénisterie of the highest order, each square carefully inlaid and polished. The green baize (tapis vert) on the reverse is the traditional surface of card and table games — the place where 19th-century salons hosted whist, piquet, and later bridge.
