Smoking Chair with Mascaron Carving and Leather Seat — Historicism, Europe, Second Half of the 19th Century
This exquisite 19th-century smoking chair combines sculptural carving, a reddish-brown leather seat, and a rare functional detail—an opening compartment for accessories in the upholstered top edge of the backrest. The centre of the backrest is dominated by an expressive grotesque mascaron: the face of a bearded man framed by wind-blown hair and volutes, beneath which hangs a carved shield adorned with tassels. The chair is both a seating furniture piece and a small work of sculpture.
Height 79 cm, width 45 cm, seat height 46 cm.
Period of Manufacture, Artistic Style, Era
The chair was crafted in the second half of the 19th century in the spirit of Historicism (Neo-Renaissance), drawing inspiration from the 16th–17th century Renaissance and Baroque tradition of mascarons and grotesques. The frame is made of walnut with a warm, deep patina; the front legs are carved with laurel leaf bands. The mascaron, volutes, and shield are true wood carving—the facial expression, hair curls, and beard flow are rendered with genuine sculptural mastery.
A snapshot from the Historicism era: Pierre Loti reclined against the upholstered top of the chair in a smoking room in his Rochefort home, its walls adorned with Oriental hangings and trophies from distant travels. Dusk was settling in the garden beyond the drawn curtains, and a thin stream of blue smoke slowly rose in the room. His fingers brushed against the cool leather at the top and, beneath it, the hard, carved lines of a wooden face, as if the chair itself were listening to the stories. Opening the small compartment and taking out a cigar, he momentarily sank into that special evening quiet when the world narrows to a single warm, smoke-filled space and a flow of memories.
Manufacturer and Mark
The chair was made in a European artisan workshop in the second half of the 19th century; there is no maker’s mark or label. The quality of the carving indicates a skilled woodcarver.
Rarity and Significance
Smoking chairs with integrated cigar compartments and sculptural mascarons are rare and sought-after—they were made for gentlemen’s smoking rooms and studies, and few have survived due to their functional components. Here, both the quality of the carving and the preserved opening compartment make the chair a particularly collectible item.
Application in Interior, Design, and Photography
The chair is a striking accent piece for a study, library, cigar room, club, or gentleman’s dressing room. The dark wood, reddish-brown leather, and dramatic mascaron fit perfectly into a classic, clubby, or eclectic interior. The sculptural backrest makes it an ideal subject for photography and interior styling.
Gift and Personalization
An impressive gift for a cigar aficionado, collector, lawyer, or anyone who appreciates the theatricality and functional design of 19th-century craftsmanship.
Condition
The chair is in good overall condition, with a vibrant, warm wood patina. The leather seat is in good condition, with natural age creasing and decorative bronze nailhead trim. The compartment in the top edge of the backrest opens on hinges and is functional. Normal age-related wear is visible on the wood—individual minor scratches and scuffs. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
