Rococo Revival Commode with Carved Mirror — Louis XV Style, France, approximately 1870–1890
This graceful commode with mirror superstructure is a fine example of the Rococo Revival — the return to Louis XV style that swept the best and Belgian cabinetmaking workshops in the second half of the 19th century. Dating to approximately 1870–1890, it belongs to the early Belle Époque, when provincial haute bourgeoisie homes filled with sinuous, warmly carved walnut furniture as an answer to the industrial world’s straight lines.
The piece comprises two parts: a lower commode with a bombé corpus on cabriole legs, and an upper mirror superstructure with a small shelf. The mirror frame is crowned with a freely carved rose and acanthus bouquet flowing over the arched bonnet cornice. Side volutes form elegant shoulders around the oval mirror. The commode door carries a deeply carved flower basket relief within a cartouche — fine floral motifs on a punched ground. The reverse shows authentic pine board construction with nail fixings, confirming genuine 19th-century manufacture.
A Belle Époque moment. In 1882, the wife of a Lyon silk merchant received this commode as a gift after a good season. She placed it in the bedroom facing the window that looked onto the Rhône embankment. Every morning, sitting before the mirror, she saw herself — and behind her, the river, the bridges, the grey roofline of Lyon. One day her daughter, still a child, asked: “Maman, is there another room inside the mirror?” Her mother said nothing. Apparently there was.
No maker’s mark is present. The provincial workshop construction, quality of walnut carving and original brass escutcheon all point to a skilled regional atelier working from Parisian models. A two-part commode with intact mirror superstructure, original glass and complete carving is genuinely rare on today’s market. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.

Cette gracieuse commode à miroir est un bel exemple du — le retour au style Louis XV qui s’empara des meilleures ébénisteries es et belges dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Datant d’environ 1870–1890, elle appartient aux débuts de la Belle Époque, quand la haute bourgeoisie provinciale meublait ses intérieurs de pièces en noyer aux lignes sinueuses.
La pièce se compose de deux parties : une commode basse à corps bombé sur pieds cabriole, et une superstructure à miroir avec une petite tablette. Le cadre du miroir est couronné d’un bouquet librement sculpté de roses et de feuilles d’acanthe coulant sur le fronton bonnet cintré. La porte de la commode porte un relief profondément sculpté d’une corbeille fleurie en cartouche. Le revers révèle une construction authentique en planches de pin chevillées — preuve indubitable de fabrication au XIXe siècle.
Un instant Belle Époque. En 1882, la femme d’un marchand de soie lyonnais reçut cette commode en cadeau après une bonne saison. Elle la plaça dans la chambre, face à la fenêtre donnant sur les quais du Rhône. Chaque matin, assise devant le miroir, elle se voyait elle-même — et derrière elle, le fleuve, les ponts, la silhouette grise des toits lyonnais. Un jour, sa fille, encore enfant, demanda : « Maman, est-ce qu’il y a une autre chambre dans le miroir ? » La mère garda le silence. Apparemment, oui.
Une commode en deux parties avec superstructure à miroir intacte, glace originale et sculpture complète est une rareté absolue sur le marché actuel. L’état de la pièce est entièrement reflété dans les photographies.
