This elegant folding game table belongs to the most luxurious artistic heritage of the Belle Époque era — it was created during the period when the revival of the Louis XV style (Néo-Louis XV) had reached its peak in France and Belgium. Historicism is evident throughout — the curved cabriole legs with blackened ebène carved acanthus and shell (rocaille) decoration at the leg joints, the wavy serpentine shape of the tabletop and the lower frame with rhythmic curved rocaille motifs — all are a deliberate evocation of the historical elegance of the 18th century.

This piece belongs to that fertile transitional period when Historicism still held its forms with precise historical quotation, but the culture of luxury of the Belle Époque had already brought new vitality and theatricality — both aesthetics coexist here in one object with outstanding harmony.

Table de jeu — a game table — was an integral part of the Parisian haute bourgeoisie salon.
