“Marguises” Porcelain Plate Set with Romantic Motifs and Blue Border

A Rococo Revival Snapshot, Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Christian Dior: If the renowned 18th-century painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard were to sit at this table, he would surely smile seeing how the carefree motifs of lovers he created continue to live on this exquisite porcelain. The royal blue border and delicate gilding serve as the perfect frame for these pastoral scenes, reflecting the same celebration of love and youth that he once immortalized on canvas.

Decades later, at his Provençal estate (Château de la Colle Noire), the legendary fashion designer Christian Dior, who adored 18th-century aesthetics, would set his table for guests using dinnerware of precisely this style. Arranging fresh garden fruits on a large serving platter, he would marvel at how the rich cobalt hue enhanced the bounty of nature. As guests savored their meal and discussed art, the dishes seamlessly transformed the afternoon into a small, romantic theatrical performance, where historical luxury met genuine joie de vivre.

Introduction and Origin This is a charming vintage porcelain dinner and dessert plate set. The underside of the pieces bears a stamp with a cathedral tower and the inscription “Marguises”. While the style and decoration are highly characteristic of classic “Limoges” porcelain, this mark indicates production by a European manufactory from the mid-20th century. It is a high-quality execution, created in continuation of the finest porcelain traditions.

Design and Decor The set embodies the classic Rococo revival and romantic aesthetic. The snow-white porcelain is framed by a wide, deeply saturated royal blue (cobalt) border, decorated with rich, filigree gold lace and geometric patterns. The edges of the plates are gently scalloped. The center of each plate and bowl features a colorful, detailed motif in the “Fragonard” style, depicting 18th-century aristocratic couples (knights and ladies) in romantic pastoral landscapes.

Application The set includes a deep bowl (ideal for salads or side dishes), an oval serving platter, as well as deep and shallow (dinner and dessert) plates. This set will be a fantastic and exceptionally gorgeous accent for festive table settings, lending a theatrical and historical luxury to any meal.

Condition Very good vintage condition. The porcelain has no chips, cracks, or significant damage. The colors of the central motifs, the blue border, and the gilding are well-preserved. Only minor, natural signs of age and use are visible (possible slight wear on the gilding or micro-scratches), consistent with the age of the dinnerware. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
