Console with marble top — gilded wood, Louis XVI / Neoclassicism, Italy, late 19th century

PERIOD OF MANUFACTURE, ARTISTIC STYLE, ERA

This console is the most brilliant expression of Italian Neoclassicism (neoclassico italiano) — an era in which the workshops of Florentine, Roman, and Turin cabinetmakers combined the structural discipline of Louis XVI with the Italian love for organic decorativeness. The console’s proportions — 108.5 cm length to 74.5 cm height — create that classic horizontal silhouette that was the prevailing fashion prescription at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. Historicism: a large hallway, salon, or residence antechamber piece that does not divide the space — it conquers it.

The cut-out tablier here is more solemn and architectural than in the acanthus tradition: large S-shaped volute closures with a coquille shell in the center, palmette leaves, and asymmetrical rose rosettes in the corner blocks. It is a synthesis of Louis XVI and Rococo — a Neoclassical structure with a touch of Baroque warmth, which is precisely the soul of Historicism. The legs — in cannelure fluted fuseau form with a baluster division at the top and an awl tip at the bottom — six legs in total create a monumental, stable composition. The marble top — in light rosa portogallo or brèche rose tones with grey-violet and pink veins, a light en arbalète profile — the most beautiful of all described marble types.

Snapshot of the Neoclassical era: In April 1878, Leo Tolstoy’s wife Sofia Andreevna arrived in Florence and stopped at the window of the “Lungarno” hotel. The gate of a villa garden was visible on the street — behind it, a bright vestibule with something gilded and white on the wall. She took out a pocket notebook and wrote three words. Tolstoy lay in the next room with his eyes closed and said nothing.

MANUFACTURER AND MARKING

There is no marking — typical of high-class Italian cabinetmaking, where work was done by private commission without a factory stamp. The solution of six legs, the monumental volume of the tablier ornamentation, and the quality of the marble top indicate a workshop in Tuscany or Rome with direct connections to the Versailles and Fontainebleau tradition. Gilding — in the technique of gold leaf (foglia d’oro) over gesso — with a deep, warm tone, the color change in shaded areas indicates age and authenticity.

RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE

Consoles with six legs and a rosa portogallo marble top are an extreme rarity — such items appear infrequently in Western European auction houses and achieve high valuations. The length of 108.5 cm and monumental proportions make it a piece of furniture for representation in the highest sense. Italian legno dorato consoles are an exceptional phenomenon in the Baltic market.

APPLICATION IN INTERIORS, DESIGN, AND PHOTOGRAPHY

The length of this console — 108.5 cm — allows it to dominate hallway or salon walls without competition. Above it — a mirror or painting, on it — a bronze sculpture, a porcelain vase, or a candelabra: in any combination, the result is absolute. Pink marble with gilded wood creates one of the rarest and warmest color dialogues in antique furniture — this console is most suitable for interiors with blush or champagne tones. For photographers and stylists — the pink marble and the play of golden wood are a visually perfect pair.

GIFT AND PERSONALIZATION

This is an object that chooses its own place. It knows where to stand and what light to greet. For a person whose home has space for it — this console is a gift for a lifetime.

CONDITION

Gilding — with natural signs of time, slightly darker or worn in places. A small chip fracture is visible on the back edge of the marble top (visible in the photograph) — does not affect the display side. At the bottom, the marble reveals a natural rock structure, characteristic of Spanish/Portuguese pink marble. Structurally stable.

The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
