“Chauvigny” Porcelain Fish Service Set with Gilding (10 Pieces)
This exquisite porcelain set is crafted for the classic presentation of fish courses, bringing a true touch of dining culture to the table. The service consists of a large, oval serving platter and 9 dinner plates. Each piece is adorned with delicate and picturesque freshwater fish (pike, perch, carp, etc.) illustrations in their natural underwater environment. The design of the plates is particularly highlighted by elegant, wavy (scalloped) edges in a Rococo aesthetic, complemented by a very fine, lace-like gold pattern, lending the dishes aristocratic luxury. This level of authentic craftsmanship stands out beautifully against today’s mass-produced items.
Style, Origin, and Manufacture The base of the plates clearly shows a 12-pointed star mark reading “VÉRITABLE PORCELAINE, CHAUVIGNY, FRANCE”. This identifies the piece as coming from the renowned F.D. Chauvigny (Fernand Deshoulières) porcelain manufacture in the Vienne region of France. The Deshoulières family is one of the most respected dynasties of porcelain makers, with roots dating back to the 19th century. This specific mark and design indicate a mid-20th-century production (circa 1950s), a period when such richly decorated thematic sets were an essential part of fine dining.
Condition The set is in excellent vintage condition. The porcelain, the intricate gold pattern, and the transfer-printed fish motifs are very well preserved. The overall condition of the items and any minor, age-appropriate signs of use can be clearly assessed in the attached photographs.
