“Scherzer” Bavaria porcelain dinner service with gold band
A snapshot of timeless elegance, Romy Schneider: In the dining room of her Paris apartment, where large windows opened onto the nocturnal, rain-washed city streets, the brilliant actress Romy Schneider hosted her closest friends for an intimate dinner. Eschewing ostentation and pomp, she preferred genuine, understated elegance. The snow-white “Scherzer” porcelain service stood out on the dark, polished wooden table. Its wide, geometrically precise gold bands reflected the candlelight, creating a warm and festive atmosphere in the room.
Unlike fragile rococo, this Bavarian porcelain embodied stability, clean lines, and confident taste. Serving food from the majestic tureen with its gold acorn handle, she smiled, listening to the guests’ chatter. These dishes, much like the actress’s own film roles, combined precision with absolute, timeless European chic, transforming an everyday meal into an aesthetic pleasure.
Introduction and Origin This is a high-quality vintage dinner service manufactured in the renowned porcelain region of Bavaria. The underside of the dishes bears a stamp with a crown and the inscription “SCHERZER / BAVARIA / Y”. Zeh Scherzer & Co. was a recognized porcelain factory operating from the late 19th century to the late 20th century, known for its high-quality and design-pure products. The style of the stamp indicates a manufacturing period in the second half of the 20th century (approximately 1950s–1970s).
Design and Decor The service’s design embodies classic Mid-Century Modern and neoclassical elegance. The snow-white, smooth porcelain is adorned with wide, distinctive gold bands. The gilding is not merely smooth; it is enriched with a fine, geometric relief pattern (similar to a meander or Greek key motif), which adds extra texture and play of light to the dishes. The shapes of the dishes are laconic and rounded, with gently wavy accents in the design of the tureen and sauce boat. The tureen lid is adorned with a luxurious, gilded acorn-shaped handle.
Application The set includes a wide range for a complete table setting: a soup tureen with lid and underplate, a sauce boat, a deep bowl, oval serving platters, as well as deep and shallow (dinner and dessert) plates. This service is ideal for Christmas, Easter, or other important holiday table settings, as well as for luxurious everyday meals.
Condition Very good vintage condition. The porcelain has no chips, cracks, or dents. The snow-white color and rich gilding are well-preserved, with minor, natural signs of age and use (possible micro-scratches from cutlery), which are normal for dishes of this age. The condition of the items is fully reflected in the photographs.
