Rare Neorococo style large wooden salon easel with ornate carvings — Europe, late 19th century (3729)

This monumental, artistically and sculpturally valuable wooden salon easel (antique wood studio display easel) is an outstanding and rare masterpiece of late 19th-century decorative wood carving. The item is made of high-quality, dense hardwood, whose dark texture and deep natural grain coloring give the construction a special solidity and visual weight.

The easel’s design and architectural value are determined by its ornate decorative elements carved in high relief. Its upper part is crowned by an impressive, openwork cartouche-type finial, adorned with classic late Baroque and Neorococo style rocaille (rocaille), flowing acanthus leaf motifs, and sculpturally modeled rose blossoms. The lower supporting part of the frame is connected by an equally ornate, curved wooden plaque with deep relief wood carving cartouches and symmetrical floral accents in the center. It rests on two front, expressively profiled, downward-sloping legs that end in massive, elegantly rolled volute motifs at the base.

The easel is equipped with a sturdy, classic tripod support structure, where the massive rear support leg ensures excellent stability and a secure choice of tilt angle. A horizontal wooden shelf serves for placing artworks, heavy gilded frames, or large-format mirrors, the height of which can be freely and stably adjusted thanks to the original pin sockets embedded in the support rods and the massive wooden fixings.

DIMENSIONS AND SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Total height: 192 cm

  • Maximum width at the base: 81.5 cm

  • Construction: Large-sized, massive and stable hardwood body with a three-point support system and an adjustable height support shelf.

PERIOD OF MANUFACTURE, ARTISTIC STYLE, ERA Made approximately between 1880 and 1895, in Europe (most likely France or Italy). The item is an outstanding example of Historicism (Neorococo or Louis XV style Renaissance). During the flourishing period of Europe’s Belle Époque (Beautiful Era), salon easels of this scale, sculpturally crafted, were not ordinary working tools but rather representative objects placed in the grand salons of city residences, private art galleries, or the dining halls of aristocratic hunting lodges. They served as the primary visual support for the proud display of new, expensive paintings or ancestral portraits to guests.

Snapshot of the era: The Italian portraitist Giovanni Boldini slowly stepped back from the easel and dropped his brush onto the table… while the warm, hazy evening sun streamed into the room through the high studio windows, illuminating the recently finished portrait of the marquise. His eyes lingered for a moment on the large, dark wooden easel, whose magnificent scroll-like finial and deeply carved rose motifs cast expressive, dramatic shadows on the wall in the semi-darkness. Every curve of the acanthus leaf and the heavy, rolled base of the legs exuded unshakable aristocratic solidity and self-respect, which so excellently supported the ornate and heavy gilded frame. This sculpturally perfect salon ensemble brought a sense of sacred elevation of art and the creative process into the space, causing the very passage of time to momentarily pause in this Parisian salon’s quietude.

MANUFACTURER AND ORIGIN The complexity of the carvings, the impeccable depth of the handwork, and the massiveness of the construction unequivocally attest to the craftsmanship of masters from a leading European art carpentry workshop specializing in commissions for historical interiors of palaces and grand residences, and Haute Ébénisterie (highest level of craftsmanship).

RARITY AND SIGNIFICANCE Finding a 19th-century salon easel of this scale (almost two meters high) with a completely preserved integral wooden structure and intact upper and lower carvings is a great rarity on the antique market. As these pieces of furniture were subjected to load and intensive use of moving parts, it was most often the delicate openwork rocaille at the top or the lower leg curves that were broken or deformed. This specimen is an outstanding and intact example of stylistic purity with high collectible substance.

APPLICATION IN INTERIOR AND DESIGN The easel will serve as a grand, representative, and instantly noticeable central visual and architectural accent in a palace entrance hall, a spacious living room, a library, or a hunting lodge. It is ideally suited for displaying museum-quality large-format paintings, antique mirrors, or prestigious artworks. Thanks to the expressive plasticity and reliefs of the wood (as seen in the image IMG_0216-2-600x800.jpg), the object creates a unique play of light and shadow and visual depth, making it an excellent subject for high-level interior design art photoshoots.

CONDITION The easel is in excellent antique condition. The massive wooden construction is remarkably sturdy, monolithic, and completely stable. All sculptural openwork carvings, roses, acanthus leaves, and volutes are original and fully preserved, without any broken elements. The height-adjustable shelf and the rear leg function flawlessly and securely. The wooden surface is clean, waxed, with a beautiful and deep historical patina that only emphasizes the depth of the relief and the tool cuts. The condition of use is fully reflected in the photographs.
