Description

Large Baroque armchair with tapestry embroidery — Louis XIV style, France, 19th-20th century.

This impressive, large Baroque armchair is a true throne-like seat in the spirit of the Louis XIV era — a high, stately backrest, massive armrests ending in richly carved volutes, and an intricate carved H-stretcher between the legs. The backrest and seat are adorned with needlepoint tapestry embroidery: a magnificent floral bouquet on a softly light field, framed by acanthus volutes and small flowers on a deep green background.

Height 112.5 cm, width 76 cm, seat height 45 cm, seat depth 50 cm.

Period of creation, art style, era

The chair is crafted in the Louis XIV (Sun King) Baroque style, reflecting the nobility and monumentality of 17th-century court furniture; its creation dates to the late 19th or 20th century as a high-quality work in a historical style. The frame is made of walnut with a warm patina. The volutes of the armrests, acanthus leaves, and stretcher ornament are true wood carving — plastically, deeply, and vividly rendered.

A snapshot from the Grand Century: Jean-Baptiste Lully paused for a moment at the edge of the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, still hearing the final bars of the ballet that had just concluded in his mind. Beyond the tall windows, the park fountains shimmered in the late afternoon gold, and somewhere deeper in the salons, silk dresses rustled. In the half-light of the room, standing against the wall, was a tall, stately form — the contour of straight lines and carved volutes, on which a frozen spring bloomed on the fabric. His fingers brushed for a moment over the cool, smooth volute of the armrest, and he felt the same perfection and order that his music strove for — every note, every line in its place, serving the glory of the King.

Manufacturer and mark

The chair was made in a European (most likely ) artisan workshop; there is no manufacturer’s stamp or mark. The quality of the carving and the nobility of the proportions suggest an experienced master.

Rarity and significance

Large Baroque armchairs with hand-embroidered tapestry are a popular and representative type — their monumentality and the laboriousness of the embroidery make them sought-after interior accents. Here, both the quality of the carving and the preserved, harmoniously coordinated embroidery make the chair a complete, expressive object.

Application in interior design and photography

The chair is a dominant accent in a living room, study, library, hall corner, or by a fireplace. The dark wood and deep green tapestry fit perfectly into a classic, château, or boldly eclectic modern interior, where it serves as a throne-like centerpiece. The massive form and luxurious embroidery are particularly well-suited for photography.

Gift and personalization

An impressive gift for an antique furniture enthusiast, a lover of château style, or anyone who appreciates the monumentality of Baroque and the luxury of hand-embroidered tapestry.

Condition

The chair is in good overall condition, with a lively, warm wood patina. The tapestry embroidery is well-preserved, with a natural patina of age and decorative bronzed nail trim along the edges. The back of the backrest is covered with deep green fabric (see photo). The wood shows normal signs of age-related wear — individual minor scratches and scuffs. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
