Description
Large office chair with lion heads – historicism (Renaissance revival), Western Europe, second half of the 19th century
This impressive armchair with armrests (office chair) is a work from the historicism era, made of walnut, where the language of Renaissance revival speaks through a solemn, architectural silhouette. The top of the backrest and the massive, volute-shaped armrests end with lion heads – an expressive figurative carving executed by a skilled woodcarver. The upholstery is in warm brown leather with an embossed ornament, framed by a row of decorative bronze-colored nails; this is a representative, masculine seating furniture with an authoritative presence.
Dimensions: height 99 cm, width 65 cm, seat depth 52 cm.
Production period
The chair belongs to the second half of the 19th century, when historicism flourished in Europe – an era that revived the forms of the Renaissance and Baroque with splendor and dignity. The Renaissance revival embraced the heavy, rectangular silhouette, column-shaped turned legs, volute-shaped armrests, and a twisted H-shaped stretcher that gives the chair the solemnity of a throne. Precisely such a chair ruled over the cabinet, library, or study – a place where the decision-maker sat.
Era snapshot
Lawyer Fernand Labori placed a heavy case file on the table with his fingertips and leaned back slowly – the coolness of the leather through his shirt, the firmness of the wood under his elbows. Outside the window, Paris sank into the morning mist; somewhere in the hallway, a clock struck. A form at his shoulder, carved from dark wood, stared forward with animalistic calm, and he felt that this seat promised not comfort, but responsibility.
Material and carving
The frame is made of walnut with a warm, natural patina. The lion heads are a true figurative carving – one can read the mane, the muzzle, and the character. The turned, baluster-shaped legs and the volute-shaped armrests create a flowing, plastic silhouette; the H-stretcher unites the legs in a stable construction. The leather upholstery is decorated with a fine embossed acanthus and volute ornament on both the back panel and along the seat edges.
Application
The chair is an excellent accent at a massive desk, in a library, in a lawyer’s or director’s office, as well as in a representative living room in a classic or eclectic interior. Its scale and leather give the room seriousness and character.
Condition
The chair is in good, stable antique condition with natural age patina in the wood. The leather upholstery is preserved with period-appropriate wear and patina. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
