A snapshot of the Art Deco era, Emīlija Benjamiņa (Emīlija Benjamiņa): In the spacious salons of the Benjamiņš house on Krišjānis Barons Street, the air was fragrant with expensive perfumes, lilies, and freshly served champagne. Muffled laughter and piano music echoed from behind heavy silk drapes as the cream of Riga society enjoyed a refined evening, presided over with concealed pride by the hostess herself.
The press queen, dressed in a silk gown inspired by the latest Parisian fashion, momentarily retreated from the throng of guests to the massive dining room sideboard. Her gaze fell upon a clear, geometrically precise decanter, its conical shape reflecting the crystal chandelier in a thousand rays of light. She lightly touched the smooth silver neck, feeling the coolness of the metal and its reassuring weight, which contrasted so sharply with the delicate glass.
This quiet moment of connection with the elegant object, brought from Europe, was like a reflection of the hostess herself – outwardly radiant, sophisticated, and festive, yet inwardly possessing an unbreakable, geometrically clear will. The drink within awaited its turn to be poured into fine glasses, celebrating another evening full of triumph and influence in the new country’s capital.
Crystal Decanter with Silver — Art Deco Style
This medium-sized crystal decanter is an exquisite and aristocratic piece of table culture, clearly embodying the geometric elegance and luxury of the early Art Deco style. The decanter’s body is crafted in a classic, upward-pointing cone shape from heavy, high-quality crystal. It is adorned with precise, deep geometric cuts – star and rhombus motifs – creating a magnificent play of light refraction. The design’s laconic luxury is completed by the smooth silver neck and the original, substantial crystal stopper, which echoes the cut patterns of the body.
Craftsmanship & Period The decanter dates back to the 1920s–1930s (early Art Deco). During this period, items combining clean geometric lines with precious materials such as silver and heavy crystal became extremely popular among European high society, rejecting the excessive floral ornamentation of the previous era.
Maker / Signature / Mark The silver neck clearly bears the “800” silver fineness mark, as well as an additional historical marking (possibly the “swan” mark used for imported silver). This confirms the item’s high material quality and its belonging to Western European silversmithing traditions.
Application & Interior Use Thanks to its classic form and elegant execution, this decanter is ideal for serving spirits such as cognac, whiskey, calvados, or fine liqueur. It will serve as an exquisite, status-affirming accent on a silver tray at a fine reception, a luxurious festive dinner, or as an indispensable component of an elegant gentleman’s cabinet bar.
Condition The decanter has been preserved in excellent historical condition. The crystal body and stopper are intact, without cracks or chips, retaining their original brilliance. The silver neck exhibits a beautiful, natural age patina, attesting to its originality and lending the item a unique vintage charm. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
