An Art Deco moment, Zigfrīds Anna Meierovics: Silence had fallen within the heavy oak doors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after a long and tense day of diplomatic negotiations. Outside, beyond the tall windows, the streets of Riga were already shrouded in the twilight of dusk, but the desk lamp in the study still burned, illuminating state-important documents, a quill pen, and the barely perceptible scent of fine Parisian cigars.

The minister, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes, allowing his mind a moment’s respite from redrawing the maps of Europe and the tense negotiations at the League of Nations. His hand slowly reached across the table and closed around a cool, substantial volume. His fingers felt the precise, geometric cuts of the glass and the smooth, noble silver neck, the cool touch of which instantly brought him back to reality.

The transparent liquid in the vessel and the play of light on the cut facets seemed to reflect the sharpness and clarity of the diplomat’s own mind—qualities vital for laying the foundations of a new nation. This elegant object, brought from France, stood in the room not just as a fine interior accent, but as a silent, aristocratic witness to the new European ties and decisions that would shape the future.

Crystal Decanter with Silver — Art Deco Style

This medium-sized crystal decanter is an exquisite and aristocratic piece of table culture from France, embodying the transition from Historicist opulence to the geometric elegance of early Art Deco style. The decanter’s body is crafted from heavy, high-quality crystal, adorned with precise, deep cuts that create a wonderful play of light refraction. The culmination of the design is its smooth silver neck, the lower edge of which is embellished with a delicate floral relief ornament, while an elegantly engraved monogram is incorporated in the center, indicating the item’s belonging to a notable family.

Period of Manufacture The decanter dates to the early 20th century. This was a time when combinations of silver and crystal, characterized by restrained yet expressive luxury and geometric purity, became highly sought after among aristocratic and upper-bourgeois circles, especially in France.

Manufacturer / Signature / Mark Clearly visible on the silver neck is the historical silver hallmark—the head of Minerva—which attests to a high standard of silver, as well as the master’s initials. This unequivocally confirms the item’s historical origin, authenticity, and excellent Central European goldsmithing quality.

Application Thanks to its classic conical shape and original, substantial crystal stopper, this decanter is ideal for serving spirits—cognac, whiskey—or exquisite wine. It will serve as an outstanding accent on a silver tray at a diplomatic reception, a lavish festive dinner, or as a status symbol in an elegant gentleman’s study.

Condition The decanter has been preserved in excellent historical condition. The crystal body and stopper are intact, without cracks or chips. The silver component exhibits a beautiful, natural age patina, attesting to its originality and lending the item a unique vintage charm. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
