Historical oil painting “Still life with salon bottle and wine glass” — end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century
PRODUCTION PERIOD, ART STYLE, ERA This magnificent and academically executed artwork is an excellent example of the classical European school of painting, created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries (during the flourishing of La Belle Époque). In terms of genre, this still life (oil painting still life) continues the outstanding traditions of the Flemish and Old Masters, where the interplay of objects and light holds symbolic, philosophical meaning. In this era, such paintings occupied a central place in European intellectuals’ salons and manor house interiors — they were placed in dining rooms, above sideboards, or in gentlemen’s studies to add visual importance, grandeur, and to demonstrate the owner’s exquisite taste and respect for academic art.
The painting is executed in the classical oil technique on canvas, demonstrating excellent brushwork, depth of color, and the interplay of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) against a dark, atmospheric background. The composition is extremely intriguing, placing two distinct and valuable interior elements side by side: in the center — a dark, heavy historical salon bottle with a red wax seal, reminiscent of elite liqueur or aged spirits, and next to it, a sparkling, clear, elegant wine glass, filled to the brim with golden, amber-colored wine. The foreground is crowned by a heavy, juicy bunch of dark grapes with natural ripe bloom and a magnificent, soft pink peony, whose fallen petals poetically mark the passage of time. The painting is enclosed in a stunning, massive, and original wooden frame with a wide oak texture frieze and a deep, profiled inner border adorned with delicate, carved, gilded acanthus leaf and volute motifs. In the lower right corner of the work is a clear, calligraphic artist’s signature: “Josephine Michels”.
An artistic moment from an Etretat evening: A warm, windy September evening in 1908 at one of the villas on the coast of Etretat. After a long day by the ocean, where the sun had set directly through the chalk arches, an art collector and his guests gather in the manor’s dining room. The room is illuminated by candles and the fireplace, casting warm reflections on the polished walnut furniture. Above the heavy sideboard, directly in the light, hangs this impeccable oil painting. In the candlelight, its gilded acanthus leaf frame literally glows, while the wine glass and heavy bottle depicted in the painting seem so real, as if they had just been placed in the frame. The host slowly raises his glass, glances at Josephine Michels’ signature in the corner of the painting, and quietly savors that ineffable, precious, and harmonious sense of belonging that only true, time-tested craftsmanship can provide.
AUTHOR AND ARTISTIC VALUE The painting is a documented and signed work by the artist Josephine Michels. The artist’s handwriting is characterized by confident, thick brushstrokes and an excellent study of material textures — the clarity of glass, the juiciness of grapes, the sparkle of wine, and the fragility of petals are depicted with the highest academic precision, elevating this work above ordinary amateur works of its time, making it a serious art investment.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND SIGNIFICANCE The main value and collector’s priority of the painting is its 100% original, untouched condition. Unlike many canvases of its time, this work has not been relined, has not had a new canvas placed underneath, or been cheaply restored — the canvas is on its original wooden stretchers, secured with antique wrought nails. More importantly, the painting has been preserved with its original, heavy wooden and gesso gilded frame, which is itself an independent antique value.
APPLICATION IN INTERIORS, DESIGN, AND PHOTOGRAPHY This artwork is a versatile dominant accent in any interior. It will look great in a classic dining room above a console or sideboard, in a manor-style living room, a restaurant, or a luxurious study next to leather furniture. The painting also works boldly and powerfully in modern environments, where its dark tones, oak, and gold frame bring the necessary historical intellectualism and contrast. In photography and interior design, this still life serves as a sophisticated, deep background anchor that will instantly elevate the visual status of any space.
CONDITION The work is in excellent historical condition. The canvas is taut, without slackness, tears, or holes. The paint layer is stable, with a completely natural, fine, and noble network of historical craquelure, which only confirms the authenticity and age of the work. The original wooden frame is structurally completely stable, and its gilding and patina are intact, without significant chips or losses. The rear mounting structure functions flawlessly. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
