A small luxurious coffee table with a marble top in the Louis XV style

A Louis XV style snapshot, Gabriele D’Annunzio: In the dim light of an Italian villa, “Il Vittoriale,” where the air was filled with the scent of heavy silk draperies and exquisite oriental perfumes, the poet and aesthete sat in his deep chaise lounge. He had just finished reading an old volume of poetry, and as he slowly closed the book’s covers, his gaze fell upon a small table whose polished onyx surface reflected the dim candlelight.

Placing the heavy, leather-bound book on the stone surface, his hand lingered at the table’s edge, his fingers lightly grasping the curved metal latticework and the expressive floral castings. The architecture of this massive yet delicate metal base, combined with the cool naturalness of the stone, provided him with the aesthetic pleasure he so passionately sought in every detail of his life, transforming even a simple piece of furniture into a tangible work of art.

Craftsmanship & Period This table was crafted in the mid to late 20th century, inspired by the luxurious Louis XV (Louis XV) or Rococo style, popular at the court in the 18th century.

Maker / Signature / Mark The work of an unknown European, most likely Italian, furniture and metal casting master. The piece stands out for its meticulous and substantial casting technique, combining a metal base (brass or spelter alloy with a patinated gilt effect) with natural stone.

Rarity & Significance Such decorative coffee tables are highly valued for their expressive and sculptural lines. The base exhibits classic Rococo features—gracefully curved “cabriole” legs, adorned at the top with stylized masks (mascarons) and rich floral motifs. Particular attention is drawn to the elegantly crafted, perforated latticework elements (trellis) on the table’s apron. The crowning element is the thick onyx marble top with a naturally wavy, layered pattern in white, cream, and grey tones, following the table’s irregular, curved shape.

Application & Interior Use Due to its small size, this table is perfectly suited as an elegant coffee or tea table in the living room, next to a sofa or armchair. It can also serve as a luxurious pedestal for a small table lamp or a vase of flowers, adding a classic and opulent atmosphere to the space.

Condition The table is in good, used vintage condition. The onyx marble top is intact, retaining its polish and natural stone pattern. The metal base has developed a beautiful, natural patina of age, which highlights the relief casting motifs and lends the item an antique charm. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
