Luxurious Dutch-style still life “Flowers in a Vase” in a lavish gilded frame

This artistically expressive, magnificent, and proportionally grand painting (antique style floral still life oil painting) is an exquisite example of European still life tradition. The painting is executed in the classic oil technique on canvas, depicting a rich, multi-coloured, and detailed floral composition — a lush bouquet of flowers arranged in a round vase with a golden bronze sheen. Against a deep, smoky dark background, the artist has masterfully highlighted the character of each flower and leaf: the composition rhythmically blends pink and deep crimson roses, soft yellow and white flower cups, light violet clematis bells, and expressive sky-blue delphinium or larkspur stems. The brushwork is rich and textured, lending the flower petals a pleasant sense of materiality and vitality.

The original, exceptionally heavy, and deep wooden frame lends this artwork a special sense of grandeur, solidity, and museum-piece substance. It is constructed from solid wood, covered with noble, calm gilding with a pleasant patina of age and depth shading. The frame profile features a classic, dense band of fluting or grooves, encircled by a delicate rope and bead pattern, while the corners are crowned with lavish and three-dimensionally carved acanthus leaf motifs. The artist’s signature and date are clearly visible and boldly applied with a brush in the lower right corner of the painting: “M. V. d. Bosch 1974”, indicating the hand of a European master (a representative of the Dutch school). The canvas is secured on the back to a solid and stable original wooden stretcher.

Period of Creation The painting is precisely dated to 1974, a time when the academic revival of classic 17th-century Dutch and Flemish still life (Dutch Golden Age floral still life) flourished and was highly valued in the European art world, with masters striving to return to realism and the cult of natural beauty.

Manufacturer / Signature / Mark The work is signed and dated by the master M. V. d. Bosch. The excellent retention of colour pigments, the play of light and shadow, and the complex tectonics of the frame attest to the highest class of joinery and academic painting, incomparable to ordinary souvenir productions.

Rarity and Significance The greatest value of this exhibit lies in its complete visual integrity, bold colour clarity, and magnificent, heavy frame, preserved without breaks or loss of gilding. Floral still lifes of this scale and quality are highly sought after in the antique furniture market, as they provide immediate visual substance and representational presence to a space.

Application and Interior Use The painting will serve as an outstanding and striking visual centrepiece in a living room above a fireplace or sofa, over a heavy Napoleon III style commode, or in a representative dining room. It instantly defines the intelligent mood of the room, pairing perfectly with classic furniture, crystal chandeliers, and antique interior objects.

Condition Excellent antique condition. The canvas is tightly stretched, undamaged, and undistorted, with a completely stable paint layer — free of cracks (craquelure) or pigment loss. The massive, heavy gilded frame is completely rigid and stable, with secure corner joints and gilding that retains its noble sheen with minimal, natural signs of age-related wear. The item is fully ready for immediate hanging on the wall. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.

Snapshot of Literary Dialogue: In the solemn and quiet salon of a suburban villa in mid-20th century The Hague, where calm afternoon sunlight slowly filters through the high windows, an atmosphere of refined art and science prevails. Next to a large oak cabinet on the wall, this large oil painting unexpectedly glows with warmth and theatricality, its vibrant delphinium and rose facets bravely defying the room’s serious solidity. Dr. Simon de Bosch, long-time director of the Mauritshuis museum and an eminent scholar of Dutch Golden Age art, slowly arranging his archival books and momentarily pausing his contemplative work, gazes at the painting’s massive, gilded fluted frame and the 1974 signature in the corner. The noble sheen of the heavy frame and the saturated floral depth of the canvas bring a true cult of absolute beauty and academic charm into the thick salon walls, completely erasing the boundaries between the historical pages of art history books and the immortal elegance of this Dutch school work.
