In a Parisian atelier armchair, fragrant with plum tobacco and damp clay dust, evening light streams through the high glass roof onto a massive oak work table. In the sculptor’s workshop, a dark, glossy silhouette catches the eye, its tense musculature and bared teeth conveying primal wild energy and drama. In the backlight, the black enamel surface reflects the candlelight, highlighting every plastic line and the dynamic struggle between two powerful predators.

The lady, having slightly pushed back the collar of her grand coat, slowly circles the sculptural pedestal, her eyes following the flowing, geometrically strong Art Deco lines. Her gaze lingers on the pleasant contrast of the silvered base against the deep blackness, sensing the avant-garde spirit and theatrical tension of 1920s Paris. This expressive artwork does not merely occupy space but fills it with a powerful character and restless elegance.

Period of Manufacture Made in the 1920s–1930s, during the golden age of Art Deco and animalistic sculpture (Sculpture Animalière).

Manufacturer / Signature / Stamp An original brass plaque with the title “TIGRE ET CROCODILE” is mounted on the front of the base. The model number 2215 and the manufacturer’s stamp/mark are impressed on the side of the base.

Rarity and Significance The sculpture depicts a classic animalistic theme — the struggle between a predator and a reptile (inspired by the famous works of Antoine-Louis Barye, which gained stylized, modern forms during the Art Deco period). The terracotta (clay) execution with a black glossy finish/glaze and a contrasting silvered crocodile and rock base makes this piece an expressive example of the sculpture of its era.

Application A striking and dominant accent in a living room, study, above a fireplace, or on a substantial console table in a modern or antique interior.

Condition The sculpture is in good historical condition with authentic signs of age. Minor abrasions of color and glaze on the edges and surface of the terracotta base, as well as microscopic pitting, are visible, indicating the item’s age and originality.
