Walnut sofa with carved angel head — Louis XV style, France, circa 1880–1910
This luxurious walnut sofa with a carved angel head (carved walnut settee) is a distinctive Louis XV style salon piece — a two-seater canapé with a sinuously carved, cabriole-shaped back and seat, crowned by a finely carved winged in the center of the crest. The armrests curve into richly unfurling rocaille scrolls; the seat and back are upholstered in red fern pattern jacquard fabric with small bee motifs.

Period and Style
The settee dates from approximately 1880–1910 and is made in the Louis XV style (style Louis XV) tradition — with asymmetrical rocaille carvings, cabriole legs, and a sinuous silhouette. It is a typical Belle Époque salon piece, when wealthy homes revived the opulent elegance of the 18th century. The winged motif in the center of the crest is a direct reference to the Rococo decorative language, where putti and cherubs symbolized love, innocence, and celestial beauty.
Belle Époque snapshot: Sarah Bernhardt entered the salon after a performance, still with flowers in her hands. She did not sit down immediately — she merely touched with her fingers the carved wood at the top of the back, where something small and winged looked down, eternally smiling. For a moment she stood, listening as the room regained its silence. Some objects know how to wait, she thought, they know that people always return to what awaits them without words.
Material and Craftsmanship
The frame is carved from walnut (noyer), with hand-worked rocaille scrolls, an , and acanthus details. Upholstery — red fern pattern jacquard fabric with cream-colored ferns and small bee motifs, secured with decorative brass nails. There is no maker’s mark, which is common for this type of salon furniture.
