Description
Bronze Wall Sconce with Putto Figure and Crystal Pendants — Neo-Rococo, Belle Époque, France, circa 1880–1900
A refined bronze wall sconce centred on a sculptural putto figure in the manner of the Auguste Moreau school: a naked winged boy leaning forward in dynamic movement, arms outstretched towards the candle arms — a motif rooted in the Louis XV Rococo tradition (circa 1730–1760) and revived with great technical precision by and Belgian foundries during the Belle Époque. The pierced rocaille backplate with asymmetric acanthus scrolls and a mascaron motif at the base is characteristic of high-quality Parisian bronze casting of the 1880s–1900s. Two curved arms carry crystal pendant lanterns with octagonal beads and faceted spires.
In 1893, the electric light was beginning its quiet conquest of Parisian salons — yet bronze sconces with crystal pendants remained the mark of true refinement, glittering on silk-papered walls beside Bouguereau paintings and Sèvres vases. This piece carries that world within it. No maker’s mark; modern electrical installation on the reverse — inspection by a certified electrician required before use. Crystal pendants intact. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.
