This exceptionally impressive chest of drawers belongs to the most luxurious stratum of the Belle Époque era — the period from 1871 to 1914, when the Napoleon III style, in its full maturity, combined the achievements of decorative arts from several centuries into a single object. The chest of drawers dates from approximately 1860–1890 — the flourishing period of the Second Empire and early Belle Époque.

This item belongs to that rare fertile transitional moment when the grandeur of the Louis XIV era — with its Boule tradition of ebonized wood, gilded bronze, and marquetry — was reinterpreted in the taste of Napoleon III: even more monumental, even richer, even more theatrical. Both aesthetics coexist in this chest of drawers with absolute conviction.

The chest of drawers is an unusual and exquisite three-part ensemble: a serpentine-shaped bombé body with curved corners and a single door panel — this is the type of meuble d’appui that the best Parisian workshops produced as a wall piece for the salons or dining rooms of high-ranking clients. The main decorative element — an oval medallion with a gilded wood marquetry floral bouquet on a black background — is executed with outstanding precision: each flower, each tendril is a separate piece of marquetry. Bronze ormolu mounts cover the entire surface: acanthus corner appliqués, a rocaille door handle figure with a woman’s head, small oval medallions on the sides, and a laurel wreath and urn motif on the lower frieze. Above all this — a green marble top of the vert de mer type with a serpentine contour.

Charles Garnier was designing the Paris Opera House at that time — and it was precisely such chests of drawers that adorned its foyers and the salons of its avant-scène subscribers. Black ébène with gold and green marble was the same dialect of language that Garnier chose for his representative spaces.
